Chapter 4

Eliza woke up to the sound of Benson’s shouting and whooping. She tried to go back to sleep but it was hard to doze off to, what sounded like a dying cat.  It was in fact her

brother playing video games at 8:00 am in the morning. Eliza liked her sleep.

But it didn’t last long before Eliza was ripping her covers off and stomping to her brother’s room.

“Shut off the video games, now!” fear was evident in Benson’s eyes. He gulped and nodded before Eliza shut the door in his face. No one messes with Eliza and her sleep.

It wasn't long before Eliza was up and ready to go, dressed in her favourite white converse sneakers.  She seemed to match her apartment.

“I’ll be across the street at that french cafe, okay mum?”

Mrs. Rivers turned to Eliza.

“Sure sweetheart, but remember, please do not speak to strangers and do not leave that cafe, and turn on your GPS so we know…”

“Really mum? Again? I’m not a child anymore,  I don’t need some stupid tracking device on my phone.”

“I know you don’t want to start a fight this early in the morning, so turn on your GPS and we won’t have a problem.”

Eliza rolled her eyes and shut the door behind her.

Eliza ordered and waited for her drink. It took some time to get it since it was crowded.  It was a popular place to meet friends and grab a bite to eat. She flipped from page to page in her favourite fashion magazine taking small sips from her latte.  Just as she reached for her cup a familiar face stood in front of her.

“Nice to see you here El.” Luc smirked.

He sat down across from her.

“Are you following me?,” Eliza interrogated while squinting her eyes in the process.

Luc chuckled. “I am afraid not.”

Eliza shook her head putting her attention back on her magazine.  Concerned that she had lost interest, Luc scrambled to make conversation.

“Let’s play a game,”  he insisted.  “We ask each other questions, and answer them truthfully.  I will start.”  he firmly look into Eliza’s face and asked,  “What is your  favourite colour?”  Eliza put her magazine down.

“ Really, that is the most probing question you have?”  Her eyebrows darted up.

“I like red and you?”

“Green.”  Luc replied

“My turn, favourite cereal?”  Eliza inquired.

“I don’t like cereal.”  Eliza was surprised.

“You don’t like cereal? I don’t think I can be friends with you anymore.”   Eliza joked.    It wasn't long before she cracked a smile and they were soon laughing.  Luc was so impressed with their chemistry that he asked Eliza to join him for a walk.   Just before she could answer, her phone rang.

“Yes Mom?”, she asked with a slight annoyance.   Luc was too absorbed by the faint freckles sprinkled underneath her radiant green eyes, to hear the conversation.

She was quick to comply with her mother’s requests and quickly hung up the phone.

“So where did you want to go?” she questioned

“It is a secret.” Luc winked at El.

He imagined them talking a walk through the park and watching the sunset, on a perfect Parisian night.

“I asked my mom if I could go.” Eliza stated

“What did she say?”

“She said yes. Apparently, our mother’s have already met and approve of the two of us hanging out, so c’mon, let’s go!”

Eliza jumped out of her seat grabbing her jacket, her cross body bag and Luc’s hand.
