Chapter 3
Eliza trudged into the elevator, greeting the boy with a curious look.
“Ninth floor?” the mystery boy asked pointing to the broken down boxes under Eliza’s arm.
“Yes” Eliza directly told the boy.
“By the way I’m Luc.”
‘so mystery boys name is Luc? Hmm’ Eliza thought to herself.
Eliza’s head turned to see Luc sticking his hand out waiting for a response, but it never came.
“My name is Eliza”
“Like Elizabeth, El or Ellie?”
“no…It’s just Eliza.”
“I’m calling you El next time I see you, its short and sweet, just like you.” Luc’s smile was sweet as honey. Eliza didn’t buy it.
“Who said we’d be seeing each other again? and don’t call me El my name is Eliza.” Eliza lectured Luc sternly.
“Okay El,” a smug look spread on his face. Eliza crossed her arms and grunted. The elevator doors opened soon after.
Luc walked out of the death trap, as Eliza would call it, leaving glum Eliza all to herself. But, it didn't take long before she was trailing behind Luc asking all sorts of questions, “So do you live here too?” “What’s your last name?” “Why is your french accent not as strong as the others?” “How old are you?” to which Luc replied,
“Yes, I live here, my last name is Durand, I haven’t lived here all my life and I just turned eighteen.”
Eliza nodded her head in understanding. “Cool.”
Eliza and Luc stopped in front of the garbage room.
“Ladies first?” offered Luc.
Eliza raised an eyebrow, “nice try, but no thanks.”
Luc just shrugged his shoulders and entered the space, Eliza right on his heels. They were both greeted with an odour that made Eliza want to run out screaming, Luc seconded that.
When you think of a garbage room you would think smelly, dirty, muck or sweepings but other than the horrid odour it was the cleanest ‘garbage room’ Eliza has ever seen.
It had five garbage bins that led to the outside. The first one was Recycling, the second one was for cardboard such as big moving boxes, the third one was for glass, the fourth was the green bin and the fifth one was just garbage.
Once the two were done placing their garbage in the bins they both rode the elevator until it was Eliza’s stop.
“See you later.” Eliza strode out of the elevator.
“Bye El.” She turned around just in time to see the elevator doors close but she swore she saw him smirk.
Eliza walked at a slow pace back to her family’s apartment. When she walked into the apartment Eliza went straight to the kitchen to get food remembering she never got to finish her cereal because of her gloomy attitude. She grabbed some berries with yogurt right before heading into her room to spend the rest of her day on her laptop and talking to her old friends about Paris and how she, “met the cutest guy on the elevator today”.
In the end, Eliza was glad she hadn’t gone sightseeing. She was happier than ever that she had made a new friend. A friend she hoped to keep for a while.
