Some girls dream for romance. Some boys too, even kids in between 'em.

I guess I'm one of them.

Hi, the name's Tomika Reese, and I am about to tell you a sliver of my humiliating life of 8th grade.

Elders usually say, 'Secrets don't remain as secrets forever.' I know, that saying haunts me everytime my grandmama would dare mention it right at my face. Secrets are probably my worst nightmare and at the same time, my sweetest dream.

"Tomiiika Reese, time to get up!" I heard my precious, loud-voiced mum call, breaking my train of thought. Good thing was, I was already up. I was just savouring the last few minutes on my fluffy bed.

I threw the heavy covers aside and swung my feet and let it connect with my circular velvet rug. Stretched my arms and legs a few times before heading out from my room to our small, but homey dining hall. Dim lamp lights didn't help that much to light up the table, but hey, we've gotten used to it.

"Are you already ba-" Mum asked, her turned back slowly facing me until a frown settled between her full lips. I flicked my arms away and started heading back to my room.

"Heavens, I didn't even get the chance to settle on seat," I grumbled as I took two steps at a time, mortified at the same time that my own mother wouldn't let me have my morning meal unless I was bathed? What depravity did my mother accumulate from humanity these days?

Shaking my head, I headed for the bathroom. The warm water from the shower was making me less calmer than I was in bed twenty minutes ago. I quickly finished bathing before changing into a maroon top, beige skirt, and sneakers.

Taking my backpack, earphones and phone from my study table, I quickly shuffled down the stairs. Suddenly, something beeped making me slightly jump. It was my phone. Somebody was calling.

I picked up.

"Hello? Who is this?" I asked, my voice panting.

"Tomika, hurry! This is Summer by the way. You're gonna' be late! And fyi, for the first time, Mr. Finn beat you on being early today," my bestfriend notes, probably complimenting our "teacher," Mr. Finn.

I groaned and quickly took a cookie or two from our cookie tin. I didn't get the chance to bid mum goodbye and took off with the best two wheeled transportation: skateboarding.

I arrived at the school two minutes before the school bell rung greedily, as if laughing devilishly at tardy students. I sighed, letting a puff of relief.

"That was a deep sigh," Summer notes, her blonde locks falling over her gem-like eyes. I rolled my eyes instead, too tired to explain.

We walked up to class and walked in. Mr. Finn clapped happily to me, and I gave him an applause as well for his once in a lifetime achievement: being early for a 7:00 class in the morning. I sat on my chair and sneekily peeked over my shoulder.

His hair was as black as a starless night. His narrow eyes like canoes lost in the middle of a black, murky sea. His skin was as nearly as white as snow, his nose upturned and cute. He furrowed his brow, making a crease across his forehead.

I sighed again, this time as if something inside my chest just melted satisfyingly. By the way, his name's Zack Kwon.

"You okay, Tomiks?" Summer asks, placing her pale palm on my exposed forehead.

"Huh?" I asked bluntly, something melted again and I gave another sigh.

"You just sighed, twice, and dreamily," Summer says before mimicking my sigh as if she was me.

"I did not," I denied.

"The last time you sighed like that was when you thought that your puppy was cute enough to be your boyfriend," she continues.

I covered her mouth with my hands and I gave her a, 'shush.'

"What?" she asked when I retrieved my hands to my chest.

I squeaked my sneaker against the newly polished tiles and started nibbling my nails. Should I tell her? Can I trust her? I mean, she's my best friend for Pete's sake! But it wasn't time yet.

"I was desperate then to have a boyfriend," I finally huffed.

A phone rings behind us, and Zack's voice slurred to my small ears. I listened intently as I wrote on my notebook.

"Cassandra? Babe?" he asks cheerfully, his words filled with enthusiasm and love. My heart threateningly wanted to grab Cassandra by her furry hair and drag her as she thrashed and hissed her love venom for my precious Zack.

Zack finally leaves the room with a bunch of textbooks and never even turned to say good bye. Helplessly, I grabbed a licorice from my pocket and popped it in my mouth.

"Tomiks, you always eat licorice coincidentally whenever Cassandra calls for Zack," Summer says. I flinched. She did know.

But instead of pulping me for answers, she leaned towards me from her desk and smiled, "You'll tell me about this, on our outing, okay?"

I absently nodded and sooner, I realized my utter idiocy of agreeing before even thinking about it.

Where did I get myself into? Before I could even try to escape the classroom, Mr. Finn spoke and took his electric guitar.

My head whipped from side to side, before I took my bass on its compartment. I played with the strings, tuning it before I gave it a shot.

I played a few notes before I sang. Words came out of lips with my hate for Cassandra, my secrecy to everyone, my love for Zack, and the pain of seeing him loving someone else.

When I finished, I saw everyone staring at me with their mouths agape. Zack was at the doorway and he stared at me with a smile in his eyes. I blushed.

"You wrote that?" Freddy asked, his hands running through his hair.

I nodded shyly and laid down my bass. I took a water bottle that was just beside me, and drank greedily. Summer glided towards me with her lips set in a line.

"Your song. It's. So. Sad," my best friend started to sob and I wrapped my arms around her.

"Don't worry Sum, I've gotten used to watch somebody I love, love somebody else," I whispered to her ear and I smiled sadly.

She broke into more tears and buried her face in my chest. My smile turned into a frown and I knew I lied.

I lied being used to see him love somebody else.

What a shame. I couldn't even trust my best friend with my secret.
