The day after tomorrow will be our class outing. I groaned inwardly. I didn't want to go.
"Tomika," Esme waved a hand over my eyes. I looked up and studied my friend, trying to recollect what she was trying to tell me. I shrugged in defeat.
"As I was saying, would you like to come with us in a sleepover tonight? At my house," she repeats.
I took my phone and dialed mum. She picked up and she allowed me to join the sleepover. I hung up and told Esme that I could.
"So, who's with us?" I asked as I returned my phone on my pocket.
Esme wrapped her hands together and spun around dreamily, "Lawrence, Summer, Freddy, and Zack."
Even with her emphasising Lawrence's name, my heart was caught to my throat when I heard Zack's name. I cleared my throat and fidgeted in my skirt.

I lounged on Esme's room sofa with a big huff. Summer was talking to Esme by a big king-sized bed, a bed you could never imagine being used by a human like Esme, who for a fact, has a very petite figure.
"So, Freddy asked me out today," Summer squeaked, bouncing up and down against the mattress, her tied hair following through the motion.
"Did you say, yes?" Esme asks giddily, before my best friend took her by the wrists, scrunches her face and nods with a smile.
I took a throw pillow and buried my face into it, blocking my friends' voices as they talked about their "love life achievements."
I must have fallen asleep after, until Zack woke me up. I rubbed my eyes to chase the sleep away from it. I sat up and hurriedly tied my hair. Everybody was here, and they huddled together, laughing and would point accusing fingers against each other.
"They're playing rock, paper, scissors," Zack informs, before seating next to me. I mentally pictured him, saving it for later imagination.
He was wearing a plain white shirt with a brown leather jacket over it, denim jeans, and a pair of black Nikes.
"Did you just arrive?" I asked, my eyes started drooping. He nodded and patted his shoulder, inviting me to rest my head against it. I laid my head and was finally falling asleep again, then Zack rested his cheek against my hair. He smelt like pine and it helped giving me peace to sleep again.
Until, something flashed and clicked.
"Why did you turn the flash on, idiot?" Freddy whisper-shouts to Lawrence, who was holding his phone.
Zack jumps from his seat, making my head fall against the sofa cushion, then he walks threateningly to his best friend, "Delete that."
Everybody flinched at the tone of his voice before he sighs, "I don't want Cassandra to know anything about this picture. So, please Lawrence, I want you to delete it."
Their gazes averted to me, making me melt on the spot. But, my heart was pounding hard and my ears rang deafiningly.
Zack truly loves Cassandra.
My eyes glazed over, and I bit my cheek to focus my attention to my friends. I looked at them and smiled, "May I use the bathroom for a second?"
Esme nods absently and looks at Zack who was returning my smile for no reason. I stood up and took my stuff and left the room. Because I didn't need to use the bathroom. I needed to leave.
I silently closed the front door and ran towards home wildly. Fortunately, my mum was still awake when I got home and she gave me a confused look, but I didn't explain what I was thinking, what I was feeling. Nobody, not even my mum needs to know about it.
The next day didn't turn out so well either. Summer was too busy with Freddy, Esme was busy being student council president with Lawrence, her assistant. And, ahh, Zack. We all know he must be probably with Cassandra.
So, lunch meant being alone a table.
I munched with absolute boredom on my burrito, until Clark the Weaselhead sat next me. His bucktooth clearly visible over his thin lower lip.
"Where's your friends, Tomika? Didn't need you, didn't they?" he mocks. My hands tightened around my burrito until it was a horrid mess on my fingers. I turned my head to Weaselhead.
"I know you want to be my friend, Clark. But, we all know, rats like you don't have friends," I stood up and walked away. Throwing my messed up brunch on a nearby bin.
But, Clark wasn't finished with me, he grabs me by the wrist and pulls me towards him. I protested and tried wringing away, but failed. For me, it was surprising that a scrawny boy like Clark Weaselhead had iron grip.
"No one insults me," he hisses over my face, spit hitting some parts of my skin, making me cringe.
A fist slammed against Clark's face and he staggered backwards like an injured puppy. It was Zack.
"Back off, Hall Fanatic," Zack growled.
"Being heroic this time, Kwon? Who's she anyway, for you to defend?" Clark gurggles back, his hand nestling his bruised cheek.
The words he spoke next might have made me thankful, but it broke me apart too.
"She's my friend, and no one can mess with my friends."
Next thing I did, I ran.
"Tomika!" Clark and Zack calls after me, but I was at the cafeteria's doorstep.
"Leave me alone, please!" I screamed.
"Please. I want to be alone for a while."Then I left.
