Mid Winter's Night

On the mid winter's night of every year,

Came the local people's fear.

Every year on mid winter's night,

Came the ghosts to people's fright.

Beside the lake was the burned house,

Haunted by ghosts was the ruined house.

It wasn't always so people used to tell,

Every ghost has its story to tell.

In the town frozen by winter's might,

Lived a man with eyes green and bright,

His hairs golden like the sun,

A wealthy merchant's only son.

If only his heart would be like his face,

People dare not say this to his face,

But little did people know,

His heart was more fierce than mid winter's snow.

Though he did act grumpy towards other men,

He had to do that to inherit his father's pen,

World had chosen for him a cruel fate,

He had to bear his lover's hate.

Eyes grey and dark with a smile so pleasant,

She was the fairest of all the maidens,

How could he not help it but love her,

His duty to his father ensured his suffer.

On a mid winter's night of his twentieth year,

He learned what the people truly feared,

Hidden away in his father's chambers,

He found his life's raging embers,

Tied to the bedpost was the one he loved,

Fire and hate in her eyes, her veil he lowered.

He helped her escape that night,

He finally understood the people's fright.

From that day on in his father's chambers,

No girl stayed long enough to cool his father's embers.

A new ember sparked up in the girl's heart,

The man had got what was in his heart.

For ten years the man's love had gone unrequited,

The man had finally won against his fate.

On a mid winter's night of his twentieth year,

He overcame his fated suffer.

On the eve of a mid winter's night,

He decided to make a flight,

Far from the clutches of his father,

He never would let him have her.

He went to his embers' house,

Decided to go his mother's house,

They lay there beside the frozen lake,

Smiling after overcoming their fate,

Looking up at the dusky clouds,

They gave in to each other's clouds.

Came the morrow in each other's arms,

The man had to go out to get some alms,

What he found when he returned,

The house lay there torn and burned,

His heart lay there bound and gagged,

He ran to free her from her gags.

He woke up to the thundering cold,

His father was there with eyes so cold,

Girl watched while he was beaten near to death,

Man had to watch the light in her eyes fade.

They lay there beside the frozen lake,

Crying at the cruelty of their fate,

For ten years his love had gone unrequited,

Now she lay there all but dead.

"I want to die!" cried the girl,

" I'll never leave u alone.." he told the girl,

They walked together on the frozen lake,

Tears rolling down their grief stricken face,

Eyes grey and dark with a smile so pleasant,

She was the fairest of all the maidens,

How could he not help it but love her,

How could he see her suffer.

Ice cracked beneath their feet,

They had their very last kiss.

On the mid winter's night of every year,

Came the love people feared,

Every year on mid winter's night,

Those two walked on the lake to people's fright.

In a town frozen with winter's might,

Lived a man with eyes green and bright.
