The door knob jiggles below me, and I freeze, my head going into overdrive. It's deadly quiet, and I hate it. I wish there was something other than the doorknob making noise. My senses are in overdrive, my ears picking up every little sound. I can hear my heart hammering in my chest, my breath coming in small gasps.
-Are you alright?- the quiet send surprises me, and I jump out of my skin, then I'm falling. The vent breaks open, and Jordan reaches out for me.
I fall flat on my back, my breath ripped from my lungs. I gasp on the floor like a fish for a moment, but when I regain my breath, the door flies open, making a desk fall on me. I struggle for a moment, then as I hear footsteps, I freeze.
Soldiers filter into the room and i begin to hyperventilate, my fast breathing making me dizzy.
-Alex, please shift and get the hell out of here. The exit is two lefts and a right down the north hall. We'll be right behind you.- Jordan sends. I listen to his voice, using it as an anchor. My breathing evens out, and I lay still, letting the angry conversation going on above me flow around me.
Then suddenly, everyone was racing out of the room, Jordan, then the soldiers, followed by Toby and Kat. I shift into a cat and race towards the door, but it shuts in my face, causing me to slam into it.
I bounce off of the closed door, and land on my side, breathing heavily.
"Alex, calm down please." The scientist towers over me, but cautiously keeps his distance.
I get up and hiss at him, my purple fur standing on end threateningly.
"Fine. Be like that." The scientist says with a sigh, plopping down in a chair.
I freeze, my back against the door, the man in front of me staring.
"Wh-what do you want?" I gasp.
"I would very much like to help you escape, but the four of you refuse to listen to me." He crosses his arms lazily. "Do I have your attention?"
"Yes sir." I murmur, sitting on my hind haunches.
"Find the young scientist named Amanda England, she has agreed to assist the four of you with your escape. From there, I want you to find a friend of mine that goes by the name Aeliana. She is a mæge and helps magi like the four of you. I want you to give her this." Dr. Troy hands me a small envelope, "Keep it hidden."
I shift to my normal form and accept the envelope. It has a navy blue wax seal and is heavy, as if the contents aren't just paper. I slide the package into my pant pocket and look up again.
"And why should I trust you?" I ask quietly.
"You should trust me, well, because I am like you." The scientist pulls down his collar to reveal a tattoo on his neck. The symbol matches my own, a circle with four lines coming from the outside drawn in black ink. He is a shifter, the same as me. "Am I trustworthy now?" The man smiles softly.
"Then why did you send those guards after Jordan?" I ask.
"Full of questions, aren't we? Well, I sent them after Jordan so we could have this little talk. Luckily you were the last one out, you are the most sensible out of your group of four. Also, Jordan can handle himself as long as sedatives aren't in the mix. I think that's all of the time we have, you should go catch up with your friends."
Just as the man stands up, the door is flung open and Jordan races in.
"GET AWAY FROM THEM." He roars, magic swirling around his fists.
"It's okay! Jordan, he's on our side!" I yelp, darting between the angry mæge and the mysterious shifter.
-Jordan, he's a shifter. He's arranged for our escape you have to listen to me!- I send anxiously, trying to explain before he does something stupid.
Jordan stares me straight in the eye, as if checking whether I am telling the truth.
"Fine. He's not coming with us though." Jordan snaps, grabbing my arm.
"He wasn't going to." I say, following Jordan out of the computer room.
Still holding my arm as if I were a child, Jordan leads me down a hallway, the two of us jogging lightly.
"We need to find someone named Amanda London." I say quietly to Jordan, panting between words.
To my surprise, he laughs.
"Already found her."
