The doorknob jiggles below me, whoever is behind the door continuing to force their way into the computer room. I shift a little bit so I am a little bit more comfortable in the air shaft, and glance up at Alex who is white in the face. I try to think of something to say, but my mind is working too fast to think of something as simple as a comforting remark.
I take several deep breaths, then focus telepathically on Alex.
-Are you alright?- I send quietly, but immediately regret my decision.
Alex, surprised by my sudden send, jumps a little bit, but just enough to hit the vent cover and make it fall.
I reach forward trying to catch the little shifter, but they fall, landing on their back with a small "oof". The person at the door gives one last shove on the door, and desks go flying, one falling directly on Alex.
The person rushes in, followed by several guards. The man at the door looks to be in his fifties, his greying hair messily hanging in his face.
Everything stands still as the man and his soldiers stand still, looking around for the four of us.
-Alex, please shift and get the hell out of here. The exit is two lefts and a right down the north hall. We'll be right behind you.- I send quickly, then focus on Toby. -Toby, shift and make a break for it. Now. Run. Two lefts and a right, meet up with Alex.- I sigh, then leap down from the air shaft, and summon my magic, neon blue swirling around my fists.
There is a second of complete silence, where the soldiers and the scientist just stare, all completely surprised.
Then the soldiers yank out their tranquilizer guns, pointing them at me. I glare back in response and ready myself, waiting for their first move.
"Put your weapons down." The scientists says to my surprise, and the guards obey, outing their guns back in their holsters. "You must be Jordan."
"Yes." I say sharply, giving a slight nod.
"Please disperse your magic, its not needed here." The scientist says gently, giving me a soft smile.
"Fuck you." I snarl, my magic glowing brighter with my emotions.
"Jordan, please cooperate. It will make this entire thing much easier for everyone." The scientist takes a step towards me, and I respond with a step back, magic growing brighter still.
"I will never cooperate with you humans. All you do is test on us, hurt us, and keep us trapped here. I want out for gods sake!" I shouted, loosing my patience with this man.
"Please calm down Jordan. My name is Dr. Troy, I really think we can talk this entire mess out. Now please, disperse your magic and tell me where your friends are."
I stay perfectly still, magic still flowing around my hands.
"Fine. Be that way." He turns to his soldiers. "Only use the cuffs. I don't want any of those crude sedatives used." The soldiers responded immediately, springing forward and attempting to grab me. I danced out of their reach and sprinted down the hallway. I threw balls of magic behind me blindly, hoping to hit someone. I turned a corner, and ran face first into someone. I fell flat on my ass, head spinning.
"I'm so sorry!"
The other person exclaimed, helping me up. "Are you okay?" I pushed away from them in alarm, looking up.
She was a small brunette scientist, wearing the typical lab coat with jeans and red high tops. I recognized her as Amy, an intern who had helped in the infirmary when I had sprained my ankle during training.
"Jordan?! What are you doing out?!" She exclaimed, her face paling.
"I'm sorry." I say, then grab her from behind and wrap and arm around her neck, my other hand glowing with magic.
The guards come around the corner just as I do this, and stop immediately.
"Let me leave this prison now, along with my friends, or I will separate her head and neck." I snarl, moving my magic closer to Amy's head.
The girl gives a terrified squeal and bursts out crying, causing my heart to break. I do have a heart, just to let you know.
"Let go of her mæge." One of the soldiers bark, taking a threatening step forwards.
In retaliation, I move my hand closer to Amy's neck.
"Let. Me. Out." I snarl.
I slowly start to walk away, still holding Amy.
"P-please don't hurt m-me Jordan." The small girl stammers, tears spilling down her cheeks.
"I'm not going to." I say quietly, my heart aching for Amy. I felt absolutely awful for using her, but I had to.
When make it to the exit I see Kat and Toby waiting, and hope swells inside of me.
Then my stomach drops.
"Where's Alex?"
"I thought they were with you!" Kat exclaims, her cocky expression dropping.
"Fuck!" I exclaim, then let go of Amy. "Stay." I order, giving her a look. "Please." I add, then run back down the hallway.
