We walked into Mr Mason's office and he beckoned us to two seats. I sat down quickly and awkwardly. The office was poorly decorated, there was a large desk with a computer and a picture on (probably of his family), behind the desk there was a chair and behind that a large window overlooking the courtyards. Other than that the only thing in the room was a bookshelf and a wilting plant.
"Hello, Jason, I am Mr Mason head of this school and this is Chlo Healey," Mr Mason introduced. I nodded and then looked at Chlo who looked just about as confused as me "as you are new, Jason, I was going to ask Chlo if she would show you around school and take you under her wing until you are settled it. Chlo is a very responsible student so there is no need to be scared of her giving you false directions, in fact, you have been placed in the majority of the same lessons. Any questions?"
"Erm, erm..." I didn't know, he flung it all upon me in what seemed like one breath, and quite honestly I was bewildered. "No, thank you, aha, sorry."
"Right," he pressed a button on his computer and the sound of a printer came from under his desk, he bent down and re-emerged with a timetable "here is your timetable, we've setted you from your levels from your old school so I shouldn't expect anything will change, good luck, and come see me if you have any problems, goodbye."
With that he more or less kicked us both out of his office. "Right, well..." Chlo murmured as she shut the door behind us. "What do you have first?"
"Erm,.. art" I answered after looking at my timetable. Chlo looked over to see my timetable in more detail and nodded "Come this way" she said, and she began to walk up the corridor hastily - I had to run to catch up. We walked until we came to a staircase which we began to climb.
"So, what made you move?" Chlo asked politely. I panicked. I mean, I couldn't actually tell her why I had to move that would be insane, I couldn't tell anyone that.
"Mum got a job offer she couldn't refuse." I said quickly, yes, it was a lie and maybe starting off what may be an amazing friendship with a lie wasn't the best idea, but sometimes neither is the truth.
"Oh, right, well here we are." She pointed at the classroom door. "I'm here as well now I think."
"15 minutes late, Chlo!" The teacher spoke loudly and clearly from her desk at the back of the room and then everyone went silent and stared. I felt the 13 pairs of eyes digging into me and I began to scratch my hands - not helping the wounds from the night before at all, but I couldn't help it they would all be judging me and I couldn't do anything to stop it.
"Sorry, miss, Mr Mason wanted to see me so that I could show the new kid to his lessons." She said sweetly and the teacher noticed me. She stood up from her seat and made her way over to the two of us stood at the netrance.
"Jason Brewer?" She asked me, I nodded, my everything trembling. "Fantastic, you two just take a seat and I'll bring you your sheets, 15 minutes late to your first GCSE course though you two, i don't care about Mr Mason this isn't good enough.
"Sorry, miss." Chlo apologised and walked over to a table with a few spaces already occupied. On the table sat two people, a boy and a girl. The girl had bright blonde hair that was up in bigtails and the boy had long blonde dreadlocks in.
"Chlo, so you decided to turn up." The boy said in a joking manner. "Who's your friend?" He added.
"This is... Jason." She introduced me to him. "Jason, this is Dominic and that is Xahria."
"Nice to meet you." Said Xahria without even glancing at me. Dominic looked me up and down before grinning slightly.
"You seen Maia yet?" Dominic made conversation with the other two.
"Oh yeah, new hair colour...." Xahria stated
"New boyfriend. How old is he again, 19?" Chlo remarked in a disgusted fashion. "Like, don't get me wrong she is and has always been my best friend, but she's wasting herself away."
"Well, I haven't seen her yet," Dominic admitted, "but Xavier said she asked him for some cigarettes this morning."
"Xavier smokes...?" Xahria looked suddenly worried. Dominic cursed under his breath ans Chlo shot him a look which just read why-did-you-just-say-that?!
"No, of course not, that's what makes it so mental." Chlo saved him, and Dominic mimed the words thank you.
I was lost, to say the least. I didn't understand what they were talking about or who Maia and Xavier even were, to me they were just names. I don't know what I expected though, these three were obviously already friends, they have things to talk about, but then there was me stupid, pathetic, Jason Brewer who had been at the school for 18 and a half minutes and who knew nothing about anyone.
"So, Jason, how was your old school?" Chlo asked, but I was too lost in my thoughts to even hear her properly. "... Jason?" she reiterated. I looked up instantly.
"Sorry...? Erm, aha, sorry." I half laughed;
"How was your old school?" She asked again.
"Erm... I don't know... Erm... Difficult, to say the least, aha." I answered nervously and then Dominic and Chlo burst out laughing. I didn't even know what I said was funny, but apparently so. "What did I say?" I was beginning to get quite self concious actually, what if they just noticed how ugly I really was and started laughing about that, I didn't know, I couldn't know but I thought I knew.
"Nothing, hahaha!" Chlo laughed. "Nothing at all!" They both snickered once more and then the laughter stopped. I still have no idea what I said, or what I did, but by that point they were all including me in their conversation actually explaining who Maia and Xavier were, in fact, they even drew me a hierachy diagram.
Basically, they were all part of 'The Gang', just a group of different types of popular people who were always together. The leader of the gang was Miss Maia Burgess, everything she said went, she made every decision and was genuinely flawless, she was the queen bee so to speak, yet she wasn't big-headed about it she was still lovely but underneath all of that she did have a small mean streak that was on and off constantly, everyone called her 'The Queen'. Below Maia were the twins, Xahria and Xavier, the twins were complete opposites, Xahria was known as 'The Ditz' she was ditzy, bubbly and completely and utterly lovely whereas Xavier (known as 'The Emo') was smart, scary and moody, I was advised to keep my distance at first. Below Xavier and Xahria was the bottom tier and this consisted of Chlo, Dominic and Luke. Chlo was 'The Indie' she liked different music, dressed differently and was fun to be around, Dominic was known as 'The Art' this was because he was such an artsy person, he was constantly at something creative and was a massive perfectionist at the same time, last but not least sat Luke, Luke was 'The Hipster' he had a quiff and wore massive thick-rimmed glasses and followed the crowd as a general thing. This meant that I was even further down at the very edge of having this chance to being in The Gang but at the same time having this chance to be kicked out so far that I would have had nobody - I knew I had to be careful with how I acted and with who I was.
Despite this firm hierachy system Chlo made it clear that it meant nothing about how much people in the gang liked you, for example, Chlo and Maia were inseperable, Maia was just more popular and so remained as The Queen and Chlo being Indie was at this state of constantly being a bit of an outsider at the bottom - but she was fine with this, she didn't want popularity, she was quite a lot like me really. She just wanted friends.
