Kendra pushed her metal shopping cart ahead of her as she looked up and down the aisles. It felt odd to be out in public. Once, this would have been natural. Now, Kendra had gotten used to either staying at Fablehaven or traveling across the preserves. This felt too ordinary.
Kendra was staring down the aisle, when the front of her cart ran into someone else's.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I wasn't looking where I was going!" Kendra hurried to pick up the groceries that had fallen out of her cart and whoever she'd run into.
A dark haired young man roughly the same age as Kendra smiled at her. "It's no problem really. I wasn't paying attention either."
The blonde girl standing to the right of him flashed a grin as well. "And besides, I have a feeling that Queen's handmaidens' have a higher standing than us lowly normal humans."
Kendra blinked. "Pardon me?" She asked in an innocent voice?
The unusually attractive couple laughed. "Don't play coy. We know you're fairykind. It's obvious to anyone with half a mind and you're shining like the sun."
Kendra narrowed her eyes. "How do you know about the magical world? And how do you know I'm fairykind?" She growled in a threatening voice. If they worked for the Society, well . . . That would be terrible.
The boy held up his hands. "We're from another preserve. And like she said, you're shining like the sun. No, we don't work for the Society, and my name is Alexander. A/N : My name is Alexander Hamilton. The girl beside me is Emmanuelle."
Kendra's posture eased slightly. "I'm Kendra, and as you know, the Fairy Queen's human handmaiden."
Emmanuelle smiled. "Finally, some honesty. Though, I can't exactly blame you. Weird people knowing about our world popping out of nowhere would probably put you on edge."
"No kidding. I'm betting you don't know the half of the stuff that I've been dealing with a few years ago."
Alexander arched his eyebrow. "Actually, we know quite a bit about you. Your aid at the battle of Zzyx and the previous adventures have become quite famous. Oh, and Emma and I are twins. Call her Emma, and me Alex, if you feel like our names are too long."
Kendra breathed a sigh of relief. Even though she had only talked to the twins for a minute, the long names were beginning to irritate her.
"Annoying, huh?" Emma asked.
Kendra furrowed her brow. "How did you know? And no offense to the two of you."
"None taken. Emma just has a natural sense for feeling people out. It's very helpful sometimes," Alexander said.
"And very annoying at others," Emma grumbled. "You're not the one who can automatically tell what people are feeling."
Kendra's eyes widened. "You can do that? That's so cool!"
Emma smiled, a bit sadly, it seemed to Kendra. "Not so much when you realize your best friend has been lying to you from the start."
Kendra winced. "Oh damn, that was insensitive and unthoughtful of me."
Emma shook her off. "No, it's fine, there's no way you could have known."
"Still, I could have chosen my words a little more carefully," Kendra replied.
Emma waved a dismissive hand. "We've barely talked for a minute. I can't expect you to know my entire backstory, nor do I really feel like telling it to you. And besides, I forgive easily."
"Actually, no you don't," Alexander interjected.
"You may be my twin Alex, but you don't know me inside and out," Emma said.
"Actually, I do, we both agreed on that a year ago." Alex smirked, knowing he'd won the argument.
It was actually kind of entertaining to watch the duo go back and forth. Though, as much as Kendra enjoyed watching the twins bicker, she felt a little awkward standing there without anything to say.
"You shouldn't be feeling guilty about being awkward. We're two strangers acting like we know you and we know your secret. I would probably be the same in your position." Emma gave Kendra a lazy grin.
Kendra scowled. "I'm beginning to think you can read my mind."
Alexander laughed. "Only your feelings, darling."
Kendra shifted uncomfortably. "Please don't call me that."
"Why, does it make you uncomfortable?" Alexander asked.
"Leave the poor girl alone Alex, why must you always do this?" Emma asked her twin.
Alex rolled his eyes. "Like you're not the one who kept reading her feelings."
"Touché."
Kendra moved slightly, catching their attention. "Not that meeting you two hasn't been fun, but I have to get back home and help prepare dinner."
"That's fine, we also have to get going. We have to get ready for dinner at someplace."
"Oh. Okay. It was nice meeting you." Kendra gave a wary smile.
Alexander winked. "Trust me, we'll be seeing you sooner than you expect."
Why do I make my chapters so short? I don't know. Please don't ask for them to be longer, I know they suck since they're so short. I can try to merge the chapters to make them longer.
