The morning of the class trip to Kyoto, I layed wide awake in bed. My bag was already packed, and I was ready to go. The only thing I was missing was my hearing aids. I sighed and sat up.
I grabbed my backpack, and started to throw some things into it, like a sketchbook, some pencils, some notebooks, and some other items. However, I paused at two items: the forbidden hearing aids, and the inconvient guidebook. After hesitating, I put both of the items, along with a Japanese-English dictionary, into the bag. Luckily, I went through the Table of Contents and translated it. It took a few days, but I managed to get it done.
I stung my bag over my shoulder and grabbed my overnight bag. As I was walking out the door, my stomach growled. I glanced at my watch, and saw that I had little to no time before I absolutely had to leave. So, I just grabbed an apple to go.
With the apple in my mouth and bags in hand, I locked my apartment door. I heard someone doing the same thing to my left. It was the girl from a few doors down, but she was dressed as a guy. I must admit, though, the girl made for a very convincing guy. Heck, she looked more masculine than Nagisa!
I turned away before there was any confrontations. Afterall, I wasn't wearing my hearing aids.
The walk to the train station was a short one, and I got there before anybody else. So, I took a seat on one of the benches where our train was supposed to arrive.
Getting bored quickly, I pulled out a sketchbook and drew random people waiting at the station for their trains. None of the quick sketches were very good, but they served their purpose to keep me entertained.
A hand landed on my shoulder from behind. The sudden pressure startled me, making me jump.
"Opps. I didn't mean to scare you."
I sighed in relief. "It's ok, Nagisa."
He came around- bench and sat down next to me. After just one look at my stuffed backpack, Nagisa sighed.
"You brought both Koro-sensei's book and those dang hearing aids, didn't you?"
I saw no reason to lie to him, since he had already figured it out.
"Yes. I did. You never know when I may need either tool...even if I don't completely understand one of my tools..."
Nagisa sighed. "At least I know that someone on the trip brought it."
I nodded.
"So...how are you going to teach me Japanese today?"
Nagisa smiled again.
"Well, while on the train, I want you to spend some of the time just listening. Also, write two lists of words. One list will be of of words that you recognize. The other list should be of words that get used a lot in our conversations." He paused. "But here's the catch: you aren't allowed to use your hearing aids or the dictionary that I am sure you have in that stuffed backpack of yours. However, feel free to write down a translation if you think you figured it out."
I responded with a question that was bouncing around in my head.
“When are we going to go over my lists?”
Nagisa thought for a moment.
“How about we meet up about half-way through the train ride. I’ll have further instructions after that.”
“OK.”
We sat in silence for a couple of minutes before another set of hands grabbed our shoulders, making us jump. We looked to see who the owner of those was. It was the redhead from class, but I couldn’t remember his name. He smirked deviously.
“Ohayo, Nagisa-chan, Danny-kun.”
Nagisa spoke.
“Ohayo, Karma-kun.”
I stayed quiet the whole time, listening to the words being said. I noticed a slight difference in their speech patterns. Nagisa spoke slowly, deliberately, whereas Karma spoke rapidly. If I didn’t know any better, I would say Nagisa was speaking slow on purpose.
I pulled out my Translation Note and opened to the second ‘subject’ slot.
On the first page of the section, I wrote down Nagisa’s instructions. However, I tweaked them a little. Instead of doing two separate lists, I was simply going to split the pages into two columns. The Japanese words would go into the left column, and the English translations would go into the right column.
At some point while I was setting up my notebook, Karma and Nagisa had grown silent. I looked up at them.
They were both staring at me, but with different expressions. Nagisa looked nervous. Karma was staring at me, expectantly.
“Gomen. Demo, nani desu ka?” My speech was hesitant, showing a lack of confidence in what I was saying.
The two sighed. But then Karma shot Nagisa a look, and asked him something. Nagisa hesitated, at which Karma said something else, which made Nagisa pale. Shakenly, Nagisa said a single word that I understood.
“Īe”
At this, Karma chuckled and Nagisa turned to me and bowed.
“I’m sorry, Danny-kun!”
Shock rippled through me as my gaze shifted to Karma’s confident smirk.
So he already figured it out? Dang. Karasuma-sensei was right. This class is perceptive. This is the first time I’ve spoken to Karma, and he already figured me out.
“That was quick, Karma-kun. I see that you already figured out my secret.”
“So what are you going to do about it?” Nagisa asked.
“Well, I don't want more people to find out...so we could say that I got sick, and lost my voice? That way I could avoid talking…”
Karma started digging around in his bag, only to pull out a doctor’s mask.
“Then you’ll need this to make it convincing.”
I took it hesitantly, and Nagisa voiced my question.
“Why do you have a doctor's mask?”
Karma smirked darkly. “You never know when I might find the perfect victim.”
We both backed away slightly, causing Karma to chuckle.
“Just put it on before anybody else gets here.”
I nodded, and cover my face with the mask.
“Hey Karma-kun?”
We turned to Nagisa.
“Can you speak slowly today? Danny-kun will be taking notes of what Japanese words are used today in our conversations, so could you help us out by doing that? Please?”
Karma gazed at us before giving his answer.
“I'll try.”
“Thank you!” Nagisa bowed.
I bowed, too. “Arigato, Karma-kun.”
Soon after, the others from class 3-E began to arrive at the station.
