Chapter Seventeen
The hospital's heart rate monitor's beeping has officially given me a headache but at the moment, that's the least of my troubles even though I've had multiple visions of me throwing it out of the window that overlooks the car park. Although I guess you could say I'm happy it's beeping, it means Jackie is still stable. She's been in and out of consciousness for a week now and her condition is worrying as the doctor said. I've not left the hospital, I've slept in the same chair for days and it is extremely uncomfortable but I need to be here for every time she wakes up. She can't be alone during this. Joe keeps trying to convince me to come home, he's with me a lot of the time but he goes home at night, only because I demand him to. My parents have visited twice and for once, I felt like they were here for us and not because they felt it was what they were meant to be doing. We're a proper family and nothing feels fake anymore. Nothing feels forced like the many Christmas's or family holidays we all spent miserable.
"Y/N?" I suddenly hear, I turn with a jolt and come face to face with Jackie who's cuts and bruises are slowly healing.
"Hey, I'm right here."
"Go home, get a proper nights sleep and oh, my god. Shower." She giggles quietly, her eyes still closed. That's something I will forever be grateful for, her humour and personality is still brightly beaming through her.
"No, I'm going to be here until the minute you get out," I say with a light chuckle, taking her hand in mine and leaning onto the bed.
"I hate to imagine how you're going to be smelling then."
"Shut up." I smile, nudging her slightly, making sure to be careful of where she's hurt. "How are you feeling?"
"The same," she sighs. "Head really hurts." If it wasn't for the fact that she hit her forehead on the steering wheel multiple times before falling down onto the roof of the car, she'd probably be out of the hospital by now. She had suffered a severe concussion and has broken her ankle. "Has the doctor said when I can leave yet?" Jackie adds, dropping everything positive that had just built up. I know it's awful to not telling her that the doctor is really only telling me bad things but I don't want her knowing that she isn't doing well because I know it'd effect any possible progress.
"No, not yet," I respond, that not being a lie.
Later that day, Jackie's asleep and I'm on my phone but Joe comes in meaning I put my phone down and turn to him, kissing him and giving him a hug.
"Okay, so I got you (your favourite warm drink), your favourite hoodie of mine and a clean pair of jeans, and on the side a (your favourite chocolate bar)." Joe greets me, handing me my warm drink and chocolate bar before placing the clothes on Jackie's bed. I smile at him, jumping up and wrapping my arms tight around him.
"Thank you," I whisper, keeping myself latched onto him as he wraps his arms around my waist and nuzzles his head into my shoulder.
"I miss you," he simply says before I pull away and look down with guilt. "Please. Just come home for one night so you can get a good nights sleep."
"I can't leave Jackie," I tell him with a sigh, resisting to the drink immediately and taking the first sip which is always the best sip in my opinion.
"Okay, you go home for the night and I'll stay here." He then says hopefully.
"That's not how it works," I explain. "I need to be here for each time she wakes up."
"But she'll have me," He says, giving me the goofiest smile. "Who doesn't want to wake up to this?"
"I mean..." I laugh, looking away jokingly and taking another sip from my drink.
"Hey--you love it!"
"You keep telling yourself that Joe." He puts a hand on his heart dramatically before coming over to me and tickling my stomach causing me to laugh out loudly. "Joe!" I squeal but all giggles stop and he pulls away quite quickly when a tall doctor comes in with a frown on his face. "Hello."
"Hi, Jackie's sister?" He begins, walking over to the opposite side of the bed.
"Y/N," I smile, standing up and shaking his hand. "Is everything okay?"
"Actually yes, Jackie should be able to be released soon."
"Wait--really?!" I ask excitedly, jumping up.
"Yes, there has been enough improvement to promise a steady progress in her recovery."
"Thank you!"
But that was the last good news I got because from then on, everything got far worse.
I didn't lie when I said this chapter would be up soon! I hope you liked the little scene between you and Joe. I need to include him more! I feel like I don't enough but anyway, I'd love to know what your favourite chocolate bar actually is? Mine would probably be a crunchie... But thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed :)
