He was handsome, with golden hair and bright, icy blue eyes, full of curiosity, amusement, and caution. He was muscular, but slimmer than than the older greaser. He was taller than me by about four inches, so I had to look up at him.
"I'm Sodapop," he said. "Sodapop Curtis."
I tilted my head in confusion.
"It's on my birth certificate, I swear," he chuckled. "What's your name?"
I hesitated. "(Y/N)."
"(Y/N)," he echoed. "Well, that's Dally, my brother." He pointed to the muscular guy. "That's Two-Bit," the guy that had taken my switch, "Steve, Johnny, Dally, and that there is Ponyboy."
I drank in the sight of them all. Tall, muscular greasers. A group. Friends. Family.
"You're bleeding," the black-haired, tan boy- Johnny- said, glancing at me, then returning his attention to Ponyboy.
Sodapop spun me toward him. He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and stepped towards me. He put a curled finger under my chin and tilted my face up. He began to dab at my nose, the cloth coming away red. "Where were you headed when you got into this mess?" he asked quietly, still wiping the blood away. I realized I had been staring into his eyes.
I had been heading home, if I could call it that. My folks never liked me much, so they didn't care if I came home or not.
I shrugged.
He smiled. "Dunno?"
"I guess not."
He wiped away the rest of the blood. "You got somewhere to go, don't ya?" he asked.
I looked away. I could go home. I just wasn't welcome. I nodded anyway.
Sodapop smiled. "You're an awful liar." He jerked his head towards the other end of the sidewalk. "Let's go get your jacket.
As we walked, I realized it had gotten dark since I stepped out of the movie house.
"You could stay with us," Sodapop suggested.
I shook my head quickly. "I'd hate to intrude."
"You wouldn't. Our door's never locked. Always open for greasers. Always."
I smiled. "Thank you." We reached my jacket, and, before I could reach down to pick it up, Sodapop stooped down and snatched it up.
"You can have it back. Only if you promise you'll stay with us if you have nowhere else to go." He dangled the jacket out of my reach.
I made a grab for it, but he put an arm around my waist and pulled me to his other side. "Promise," he said.
I pursed my lips. "Fine. I'll stay with you guys."
"Yeah!" He cheered.
