"This isn't good," muttered Myka. "She's a flapper."
"What?" asked Pete, confused.
"1920's girl," answered Myka.
"1926, actually," smiled the girl. She walked towards them slowly, still pointing her tesla, forcing them to the edge of the railing. "So, they hired more of you to 'take me out.' Well, you should know before you fall that I am actually innocent. I'd never do anything to harm the Warehouse. You people should know that." She sounded hurt and scared, and she looked as if she were trying to act much braver than she was.
"Listen," said Myka, mimicking Pete's calming voice, "it's actually 2012. Due to this artifact-" she held up the watch "-the warehouse could disappear in a matter of minutes. If you let us go, I will personally help you prove your innocence." The girl stopped in her tracks.
"2012? So... everyone I know... is dead?" Her arms dropped to her sides as tears began to stream down her face. "How... how...?" She gulped for air, sliding to the floor. Pete leaned towards her.
"We um, kinda need to go save the world. As usual. But if we succeed, Mrs. Frederic will be OK. So not everyone you know will be dead. And now you know us. I'm Pete. That's Myka." Myka waved. "We need to drop that watch in the gooery, but then, we will come back for you. I promise." The girl nodded, then promptly fainted. Pete turned to Myka. "She's had a rough day, I guess."
"Come on!" Myka looked for the stairs Pete, on the other hand, hoisted himself over the railing. "It's all about landing correctly," he grunted. Myka saw the fingers let go, then heard a thump. "Ow."
"Did you land correctly?" she shouted.
"Shut up!" he called back. "I'm fine, the ground's just really hard."
"That's reassuring!" she followed his lead anyway, until she hung from the edge of the railing. "I'm aiming for you!"
"Very nice! And you say I'm not matu-" Pete was cut off by Myka landing on his stomach. He sat, winded, as Myka looked down at him.
"Pete, are you OK?"
"Why wouldn't I be?" he wheezed. "My full grown partner just landed on me from a height of at least 7 feet." She grimaced.
"Sorry. Can you run?" she asked. Pete nodded. "Then let's go!" She helped Pete up and they tore off in the direction of the gooery. After a right and a left turn, they were there. They strode in the direction of the goorey. They were 10 feet away when a purple bolt of light stopped them. Pete and Myka dove behind a shelf of artifacts.
"Oh come on!" Pete moaned. "We're so close!"
"Alright! You found out!" boomed a voice to their right. "I never had no list of traitors! But hell if I ain't a better man than a damn commie!"
"Pete," hissed Myka. "That's the 50's guy we literally ran into."
"Somebody didn't get his nap in the past 60 years," whispered Steve.
"I think it might be McCarthy. He accused hundreds of people of being communists and then died a few weeks after he was out of office."
"Well that sounds like our typical baddie." Pete glanced behind him. "The Warehouse is getting cleaner. It's getting newer."
"We've got even less time," Myka wailed, "and now we have to worry about this nut job?"
"Come out you dirty commies!" yelled the man.
"We get it! You don't like Communists!" Pete snapped back. He turned to Myka and took the watch from her. "Here's the plan. I'm going to run out there, drop this in the gooery, and you're going to cover me."
"Pete that's crazy!" Myka hissed. She opened her mouth to continue speaking, but Pete cut her off, speaking quickly.
"It may be crazy, but it's our only chance. I'm faster than you, and you're a better shot than me. When I say go, I'll run and you'll cover me. Listen! I will do anything to keep working here with you because it is the most amazing thing I have ever done in my life." Without warning, Pete put his hand on Myka's cheek and kissed her full on the lips. "I love you, Mykes. If anyone can save the warehouse, it's us." He rose, Myka looking up at him completely in shock. "3... 2... 1... go!" Pete took off full speed towards the gooery, Myka pointing her tesla in the direction of McCarthy.
