Lavender

You said I smelled of lavender,
And it reminded you
Of a cold home
Where you were left alone.

You told me I reminded you
Of a warm summer day
Where the sky is dark
And full of rain.

You said my mind was wonderful
And full of secret things
You've alway
Sought to know.

You told me I felt like fine china
Too delicate
To touch
But tougher than I look.

You said you thought of me
As a butterfly;
Pretty to look at,
Hard to catch.

Your mother once told me
I was too pretty
To love a smart boy
Like you.

And your uncle once said
Not to worry
My cute
Little head.

And your cousin
He once asked me
Why I was t with him
Instead.

But all you told me
Was I smelled of lavender;

And I reminded you
Of a cold house.

That when you thought of me
Your stomach twisted into knots.

And my soul
Was the color
Of a thousand
Burning suns.

Lavender reminds you
Of your mother
Who doesn't know
How to raise a son.

Lavender reminds you
Of your brother
Who you've only met
Once.

Lavender reminds you
Of your father
Who doesn't know
You exist.

Lavender reminds you
Of me,
The girl
Of your dreams.
