"How's the attempt to breach the Sharks' security progressing?" a calculated voice asked me.
"Well," I managed to choke out, my heart thudding erratically as my skin remembered the echoes of Jax's lips pressed up against my skin.
"Have you gained any actionable intelligence yet?" another voice asked impatiently.
"Not yet," I replied curtly, attempting to keep all emotion devoid from my voice.
"We're giving you ten days, Z, and if you do not collect anything revolutionary, the council will decide to replace you," the last person told me, his voice the coldest and most assured.
"Okay," I nodded, closing my eyes tiredly, taking a deep breath in through my cracked lips. I heard the receiver click as my call dropped, tearing my heart into two with the silence it brought. My eyes fluttered open as I looked at the roof of my car with an innate sense of boredom that only dread could bring.
A flash of metal caught my gaze as my eyes shifted to glance through my windshield. With shaky hands, I unearthed a tiny microphone, amplifying the growing pit in my stomach. The Cobras used a different kind of bug, so that only left the possibility of a Shark bugging my car.
Which meant that Jax had heard everything I had just said.
