"Jay," I breathed out slowly, the disbelief flooding through me, unmasked.

"Anna," he smiled cruelly, pushing me forward. "I'm so glad you could join us."

I didn't reply as he shoved me onto a chair, and bound my hands. He leaned back once he finished, smiling at his handiwork.

"Now, you're probably wondering, why? Why would Jay, my gentle, quiet, beloved friend ever do something like this?" Jay asked me mockingly, circling my chair with slow strides.

"Well, the answer is simple Anna. You've always looked at me like I was a kicked puppy, but really, all this time, I've wanted the thrill that comes with being in a gang. I wanted to know how it felt to kill, to be heartless, to be wealthy. Now, I have it. If it comes at your expense," he paused thoughtfully, "well I guess I can't help it."

Unable to look at him in the eyes, I trained my gaze onto the cracked stone floor. My arms fought against the restraints hopelessly, but my brain was still in shock from the betrayal stinging through me.

"How..." I started shakily, my voice cracking, before clearing my throat and regaining some of my composure, "how you could you do this?"

"It was quite simple really. You're very vulnerable for a gang member, Anna," he informed me, smirking sadistically.

Then it all clicked into place.

He was protecting me.
