"Hey Todd." A small voice grimaced, letting out a cloud of warm mist escape and join the winter's air.
A gust of wind blew as you stared at the ground, your hair following the wind's direction. You paused and listened, waiting for an answer that you knew would never come. Yes, you knew that it was impossible. You acknowledged the fact. Yet you waited, helplessly hoping for an answer. So just like any other day, you stood alone. No one in sight.
Moments passed and you smiled bitterly, telling yourself for the millionth of time that you should've known better. With a long sigh, you crouched down. Your hand gripping a bouquet of flowers. "Y'know, sometimes I just wished that you would reply back. Even if it's just a simple 'Hi'" you admittedly joked, eyes casting over the flowers you had bought for him.
You gripped it harder, continuing your words. "I mean, I know that you can't and all... But I just wished you would reply. Just one more time..." Your voice cracked at the end of the sentence.
Shaking your head, you muttered the F word aloud, hating the fact that you broke your facade early. You studied his carefully carved name, attempting to hold back your sobs. "Don't mock me Todd. I swear, if you're laughing your ass right now.... " You threatened, pointing the flowers towards the stone.
You took a deep breath and sighed, lowering the bouquet. "Sorry, I can't help it okay?" You set the flowers in front of his name, slumping down the cold hard ground.
"I just." You bit your lips, tears forming as you did so. You pinched the bridge of your scrunched nose as memories flooded your uneasy mind.
...
"I'm going (y/n)." Jason's voice blared through the phone, full of determination.
"Don't you dare Todd." You scowled, knowing exactly where he was about to go, knowing who was he going to face.
He sighed and muttered, "I'll be fine!"
"You don't know that!" You snapped, pacing through your room to find your suit.
"This is my chance (y/n)."
"Your chance to what?" You barked, anger radiating through.
"To prove myself. You know how Bruce is."
"You'll be killed. Let me go with you." You pleaded, voice going soft.
"No, It's dangerous. You don't have what it takes."
"And you think you do?" Your voiced raised.
...
A sense of cold hit your nose and melted away. Snapping you back to reality. You regretted what you've said after that. Everything. Anger rose from inside of you, all you could feel and see was red. "Why do you have to go on that f*cking mission of yours Todd!!!???" You hit his name and felt your blood boiled.
"You should've known better!!!"
"I already told you and look what happened!!!"
Flakes of snow dove down upon the earth, descending onto the field of stones and dirt. Minutes had passed yet your fists continued to collide against the hard surface, staining it in the process as your screams echoed throughout the silent area.
You hated to admit, but you were still in too deep from loss. You tried every single way to get rid of the Joker. There was one time you even managed to shoot him in the chest, though Bruce came to his rescue. He kept saying that it wasn't what Jason would want you to do. But you knew better, Jason wasn't one to have criminals live in harmony. It was one of the same reason on why he had gone to chase after the Joker alone.
"If only you listened to me!" You sobbed and tears fell freely down your reddened chin. Pelting the gravestone with a sense of grief. Your breath were ragged and your hands trembled as it was being raised again. Strength seemed to left your body as you moved your hand away from the bloodied stone. Covering your mouth, you attempted to keep your sobs from erupting any further.
You couldn't help it, you couldn't contain it any longer. Five years had passed since that horrid day. You're still burdened by guilt and grief, you were still longing for his presence.
He was your your best friend.
He was your partner.
He was your strength.
He was gone.
And his name carved.
