t was early 1974 and I had been working at Adamson-Duvannes Art Gallery for the last two years. Having come back to Los Angeles after my break up with John Lennon had been a very positive move. Emma and Franz had been back since she had finished her medical degree and had allowed me to move in with them during my first year back. It was tough at first... I tried to keep a low profile and eventually the media stopped hounding me and simply focused on John and Yoko's relationship. I avoided newspapers and television as much as I could; I didn't want to know anything regarding John or Yoko. I needed to focus on me and what was going on in my life. Eventually, as the years passed, so did my feelings for John. I still loved him, but it was a different kind of love...the love one feels for an old friend...I had hoped to one day see him again, but I never thought that day would be today.
"Yes Emma...I'll see you and Franz at 5:30. The gallery closes at 5 and I should be out of here and at the park by then." I said into the phone receiver.
"Okay...we'll see you there." Emma responded.
"Okay...bye!" I said hanging up the phone.
The traffic in the gallery had practically been non existent today and I was planning on closing on time, but at a quarter till 5, as I was counting the minutes to close, I heard someone walk into the gallery. I followed their footsteps into the far wing of the gallery and saw a man looking at some of our most expensive pieces.
"Good afternoon...can I help you?" I asked.
The man turned around and my eyes widened while my mouth dropped open. "I cant believe it..." I said as I began to smile and laugh softly. "John Lennon...what are you doing in my art gallery?"
"Mirel?" John let out a chuckle before walking towards me and gave me such a big hug he lifted me off the ground. I laughed as I put my arms around him.
When he finally set me down I got a good look at him. His hair had gotten longer and he was wearing those same round glasses he had worn the last time I had seen him, but this time they were a bit tinted.
"Mirel...you look great...you colored your hair!"
"Yes...a few months ago...you like it?"
"I never would have thought of you as a red head, but it looks good!" John remarked.
"Well it's a deep red...I wasn't brave enough to go brighter." I laughed. "But how are you?"
"I'm alright....I'm trying to keep busy." John said. There was a pause before he continued. "Well...actually I'm here in LA because Yoko and I are kinda....taking some time off....from each other." John admitted.
"Oh...I I'm sorry to hear that." I said.
"Yeah...we just both needed some space, you know?"
"Of course." I said.
"So you work here then?" He asked.
"Yes. I'm an art dealer for the gallery. Can you believe it? My degree actually paid off!" I laughed.
"Well you have some really amazing pieces." John said as he looked around.
"They really are great." I smiled.
"What time are you closing today?" John questioned.
"Well..." I said looking at my watch. "in about 5 minutes actually." I replied.
"I guess I'll have to come another day so I can really look at some of these paintings." John said.
"Definitely..."
"So...maybe you'd like to get a drink or something after you close? You know, so we can catch up?" John asked looking straight at me.
"Oh...well I'd love to catch up John, but...well I kinda already have plans...." I admitted.
