The next day Elise and I showed up at the hospital, but we weren’t the only ones that were waiting for John’s release. Apparently, word on the street was that John Lennon had gotten into a car accident and was due to be released that afternoon. As Elise and I made our way through the hospital, flashes of cameras went off. A few reporters stuck a microphone in my face wanting to know how John was doing. I asked Elise to bury her head in my shoulder, as we had done that day when we had left the hospital with her. She did as she was told and I was able to get through to the hospital staff who then let me go down to John’s room.
When I walked in, John was already dressed and out of bed. As soon as Elise saw John, she struggled to get out of my arms and ran towards him. John’s reaction was to immediately take her in his arms and hug her. Once she finally let go of him, he continued carrying her. He looked at her and smiled.
“Daddy, I missed you!” Elise said excitedly and she hugged him again.
John laughed and hugged her again before putting her down.
I was surprised not to see Yoko in the room with John. I figured she would be with him during his release from the hospital and I took advantage that Elise was exploring the room to ask John about it.
“I’m surprised Yoko is not here.” I said to John.
“She’s not going to come.” John said casually.
“She’s not?”
“I asked her not to.” John confirmed.
“Really?”
“After you left yesterday night, she and I talked. She kept telling me I needed to go home with her today. She said she wanted to be there to help me with my therapies.”
I simply looked at John, waiting for him to continue.
“But I said no. I didn’t mean to be disrespectful towards her or to upset her, but I’m not going to feel comfortable around her. Besides, why now? If we were separated before the accident, why would she want to get back together now?”
“What did she say?”
“That she was my wife. That she loved me. That she wanted to work things out. I asked her about May too. Asked her if she wanted to work things out why she had sent me with another woman?”
“And in all of this, where is May? I’m surprised she hasn’t stopped by to see you.” I replied.
“I don’t really know and I don’t really care. Mirel, don’t you get it…I don’t want to go home with anyone but you.” John said as he looked me straight in the eye.
“What?” I involuntarily heard myself say.
John chuckled a little. “Mirel, I meant what I said yesterday. I love you…and I want to be with you…and I can’t love someone else just because she’s my wife and people tell me I am supposed to love her…it doesn’t work like that. It didn’t happen with Cynthia and it’s not going to happen with Yoko. Look, I don’t know what was going on in my life when Yoko came into it the first time around, but it is obvious that things weren’t that great between us if we were separated…so why go back to that?”
“But-“
“You don’t want me to go with you? Mirel, you’re all I’ve got right now. Please. I need you.”
“It’s not that I don’t want you to come with me…but are you sure that’s the best thing for you?”
“Yes.”
“But I wasn’t a part of your life again until recently…how do I help you recall memories when I wasn’t a part of them?”
“Mommy…when are we going home?” Elise interrupted.
