John and I talked with Elise regarding John’s move to New York. We tried to explain to her that because he would be living further away, we would be seeing less of him. It was hard for her to understand, but we reassured her she would get to see John regardless of the distance.
Before John left, I pleaded with him to keep his promise. It had taken a lot for me to come clean with Elise about her dad and having to pull her away from him now was heartbreaking. John promised he would call Elise frequently and that we’d see him before we knew it. When the actual day came for him to leave, it was harder than what I had anticipated. John showed up by himself that morning. He played on the piano with Elise one last time before telling her how much he would miss her and they’d see each other very soon. Elise had a sad expression on her face, but she managed to hold it together, without crying. I walked John outside before we said goodbye.
I took a deep breath and tried to smile.
“I guess this is it, huh?”
“It’s just the beginning, Mirel. You’ll be in New York in a month or so and we’ll talk on the phone often. This isn’t goodbye, luv…just a see you later.” John replied.
“I know….” I said. “Thanks for everything, John.”
“I should be the one to thank you. That little girl in there is incredible…and I have you to thank for that. I never thought it would be so hard to leave Los Angeles…but then again, I never thought I’d be leaving you and Elise when I first arrived here…”
“I’m sorry I kept Elise from you…” I said softly. “She is absolutely in love with you…”
“You had your reasons…and I understand them…but let’s not dwell on that. That’s done and over with. Now we just have to look at the future.” He smiled.
“Good luck in New York, John.” I said, holding back the desire to ask what was going to happen with Yoko now that he would be back there.
“Thanks. I’ll see you there in a month, okay?”
I nodded.
“I better get going.” John said as he leaned in to hug me.
I wrapped my arms around him and fell into his embrace. It was heartbreaking…just as heartbreaking as that day in England when he walked away from me to go with Yoko. I was just as much in love with John now as I had been then…and I was having to say goodbye to him knowing he would be going to Yoko. I finally pulled away and looked at him. I could feel my eyes tearing up…I couldn’t help it. John looked at me sweetly, but didn’t say anything. He brushed my cheek with his hand and gave me a soft kiss on the lips.
“I’ll see you soon.” He said as he walked towards the car he had driven here.
I blinked and the tears ran down my cheek. One month couldn’t come fast enough.

Elise, Emma, Franz and I stepped out of the airport and onto the streets of New York City. John had arranged transportation for us from the airport to a hotel near the studio he was recording. Elise was so excited to be seeing John. John had kept his end of the deal and had called Elise a few times a week since he had left. I had talked with him as well and was told he was all but done with Harry’s album and in a few weeks would start recording an album of his own. We had made plans for dinner later that evening- John would be picking us up and we would head out to the restaurant all together. By the time we got settled into the hotel, all of us were pretty beat, so we opted to postpone any sightseeing until tomorrow. Elise took a nap while I watched a little television and relaxed. At around 7pm, I began getting Elise ready and then focused on myself. It had been a month since I had seen John and couldn’t help but want to turn his head when I saw him again.
