The next couple of days were a blur. John met May, who was taken aback by the fact that John didn’t have any idea who she was. He was friendly with her, but didn’t treat her any differently than he’d treat anyone he just met. He talked with her a lot; however. May was particularly helpful in filling him in on what his life with Yoko had been since she had started working with them. She was able to give him names and phone numbers when it came to his business and financial affairs, but the one number John was especially grateful for was Cynthia’s.
“Thank you so much for coming down.” I told May as she picked up her purse.
“Of course.” She nodded.
“You’ve been a tremendous help, luv. Don’t know what I would’ve done without you.” John said.
She smiled timidly. This was a different May than the one I had met.
“I’ll walk you to the elevator.” I said as she opened the door to the hotel room.
As we walked down the hall, I put my hand on her shoulder to stop her.
“May, I’m so sorry about…this whole thing…with John…”I trailed off, not knowing exactly what to say to her.
“You know, I always thought there’d be an end to my relationship with John…I just never thought it would be so abrupt…and never imagined it would be under these circumstances.”
“I don’t know how to thank you for all you’ve done…for all the information you’ve given John.”
“I love John.”
“I know you do.” I said softly.
“If you need anything else, don’t hesitate to call me. You have my number.” May said
I nodded. “Thank you…”
May began walking towards the elevator and I picked up my pace to catch up to her. As we waited for the elevator to come to our floor, she turned to look at me.
“He was constantly talking about you when we were together…you know, when you two saw each other again in California. He always said you two were only friends now, but a girl knows when a man has feelings for another girl. I ignored it because…well given the current situation I was in…what was I supposed to do? But Yoko won’t ignore this. She has too much invested in John to simply walk away from him…even if she sees him happy with you. Her plan has always been to get back together with John…take a break from him…but always with the intention of getting back together with him. John’s happier without her, Mirel. I want to see John happy…and if he’s happy with you, then I will walk away for his happiness. But Yoko won’t…and you need to be aware of that.”
The elevator dinged as the doors opened.
May stepped in, turned and smiled slightly.
“Take care of him.” She said as the doors closed.
As I walked back to my hotel room I realized just how much May really loved John. I had a new found respect for her. It must have been heartbreaking for her to come down, interact with John the way they had, and simply walked away from him. She never had the intention of staying, of trying to make John remember her, and if she did, she didn’t let it be known. She was looking out for John and his happiness. She knew I could make him happy, but she had been very clear to let me know that Yoko would not leave me the path free with John.
I walked in to see John standing by the phone. He looked over and sighed.
“Thinking of calling Cyn.” John said.
