It's 5:52am and I still haven't gone to sleep. I lay beside Alex as I stare up at the blank ceiling. My mind was wandering. I thought of everything, yet nothing at the same time. What if he doesn't survive? What if he can't breathe on his own? What am I supposed to do?

All I want in life is to help others. Help Alex. But how am I supposed to do that when his dad and the doctors won't give him enough time. How am I supposed to help when no one else is willing to? I take deep, stressful breath as I glanced over at Alex. By now, he is gaining some color back. Not much, but he isn't as pale as he looked before.

I heard a soft knock against the room's door, assuming it was the nurse I jumped up and swung the door open. Dad came into view.

"What are you doing here?" I questioned, looking down at my feet. My socks were dirty, but still florescent. Still bright. They managed to catch me off guard as dad talked. It doesn't help that I haven't slept in a few days. My brain didn't process any of the words he said. It all just came out gibberish. "Repeat what you just said." I commented, looking up at dad. His stare burning into me.

"I said, Deputy Standall wants you to stop hanging around Alex. If he is going to pay for him to stay alive without having any memory, he doesn't want Alex to remember you... Remember anyone from around here." Dad informed me, causing my stomach to drop. My heart to shatter slightly.

"No." I tell him instantly. "I'm not leaving him. Alex is not leaving me." I shake my head in disagreement. I slid my feet back until I reached Alex's bed. I sit down at the end near his feet as I play with the cover. "I'm staying here."

"It doesn't work like that Sweetheart. His dad will make the rules. If he doesn't want anyone to stay with him, or come visit him, then no one can." Dad declared, his voice full of irritation.

"I'm not leaving." I repeated. Before anyone could speak another word, Alex moved. He moved more than normal. My heart dropped, butterflies rushed through out my stomach. I slowly focus my attention on Alex, who was staring directly at me. His deep brown eyes stared right into my blue ones. A wide smile appeared across my face. As soon as things were about to get bad, this changed it all.

"Hi Alex," I continued to smile as I waved sweetly.

"Who are you?" he questioned. My happy smile soon turned into a depressing frown. The transfer was almost instant. He doesn't remember me. The nurse told me he wouldn't, I guess I should have listened.
