The light was shining through the window causing me to stir. I flip over to the other side away from the window blocking out the sunlight.
Sunlight?
Quickly opening my eyes I try to lift myself from the bed only to stop midway because of the pain I felt in my chest. Stopping for a brief moment I close my eyes and take some slow deep breaths trying to get the courage to completely lift myself up.
As I sit up on the bed, I look around my surrounding that resembled a hospital. There was a heart monitor beeping right next to me, and my left hand was connected to an IV. Panic started to rise inside my chest.
No. No. No. They got me again.
A binder was placed at the front of my bed. Picking it up it read "U.S. Army". Tracing the letters on front of the binder I let out a tear. I was finally free. Opening the binder, I look at the top where my name should be, but it read Jane Doe. Reading through the notes the doctor had written, a form of relief floods through my mind.
A sudden beeping noise echoes from outside the room. I ignore it thinking someone else would get to it. Using the remote on the side of my bed, I tilt the bed upwards so I can lean back comfortably. I close my eyes hoping to get a little bit more rest. But the damn beeping noise just wouldn't stop.
Deciding to take this matter into my own hands, I pull out the IV from my hand, and carefully get out of the bed. Walking across the room, I slowly open the door and stick my head out. The beeping noise got louder, and there was no one in sight.
"Hello. Is there anyone here?" I ask.
No response.
Moving my head in both directions of the hallway, I begin to walk where the beeping noise was coming from. I stood in front of the door where it seemed like the beeping noise originated from. Placing my hand on the doorknob, I slowly twist it open, to see a man laying on the bed.
Tyler's P.o.V.
"I need some help!"
A man holding a little girl, came running into the clinic. Both were covered in blood, but you could easily tell that the blood belonged to one person, and that was the little girl's. Racing over to the man, I took the little girl from him and placed her onto the nearest bed. Apparently there was a car explosion not too far from our base, and the little girl was around the car searching for some food.
My team and I spent two hours trying to revive the girl however, it was all in vain.
"Time of death 8:58."
I didn't have the heart in me to go up to the father and tell him that his daughter was dead.
"It's okay Tyler, I got this," said Katherine.
Nodding my head I walked out of the clinic, but only before getting a brief glance of Katherine approaching the father. Stepping out I heard a loud cry coming out from the clinic. Losing a patient made a doctor always feel a certain way, but when it came to telling the family about it, just made it a hundred times worse.
"How's she doing?" asks Nick as he slowly approaches me.
"Who?" I ask confused.
"Who else do you see me checking up on?"
"Oh, oh, her." I realize he was talking about the girl we found in the jungle three days ago, and not the little girl that was brought in this morning. "Umm, I haven't had the chance to check up on her this morning."
Nick comes closer and places his hand on my shoulder. "You okay man?"
Shaking my head no, I begin to walk back into the clinic praying that this day does not get any worse.
"Tyler," Katherine yells.
"Hey, are you okay?" Katherine takes both my hands and starts to caress them with her thumbs.
Katherine and I knew each other for about 9 years now. I met her in the library during our first year of medical school. She had gorgeous red hair with freckles around her nose and green eyes. It only took me about a few days to charm her before I was able to claim her as my girlfriend. Things were going really well between us all throughout medical school. I thought she was the one for me, and the day I was ready to pop the question, my world tore apart. I found her with another man and needless to say I broke that man's jaw and left arm.
I joined the army right after graduating from medical school, to run away from my past. But what I didn't realize was that she would come running after me.
It started off with her profusely apologizing to me everyday and asking for a second chance for the first couple of months. After months of ignoring her, I finally told her that I forgave her. Although I didn't fully forgive her, I just had to find a way to get her to stop. I told her that things could never be how it was, but I was willing to give her a shot at just being my friend.
I retrieved my arms from her grasp and took in a deep breath. "Katherine, we've been through this. You know I don't like it when you touch me."
"I know. I'm sorry. It's just a habit," she says while looking down.
I turn around and begin to walk away.
"Are you going to visit the Jane Doe patient?" she asks as she catches up to me.
"Yeah," I briskly respond.
"I'll come with you."
Walking down the hallway, I notice something off. The door to the girls room is wide open. Walking in I notice that the heart monitor is off and the IV is placed on the bed, but the girl is nowhere in sight.
This day could not get any worse.
"Where is she?" I yell.
"I don't know. I checked up on her about two hours ago. She was here and asleep then." Katherine says with panic.
"Find her," I mutter.
Katherine runs out the room heading back towards the front of the clinic. Walking out the room I head in the opposite direction of Katherine with hope of finding the girl. As I pass each room, I look through the small window on each door. Walking past the last door, I turn back around and glance at the window again.
"You have got to be sh***ing me."
Yanking the door open I yell, "why the hell is your hand inside my patients chest?"
I spoke too soon about this day getting worse.
