I woke up when I heard voices coming out from the door. I stared at the door waiting for someone to walk in or to at least stop talking. A few moments later a man walked in with a smile plastered on his face.
"Hi, I'm Cody," he says approaching my bed. "I'm one of the doctors who work here."
I nod my head in acknowledgment.
"Do you mind if I check your vitals?"
I nod my head again and try to sit up on the bed but, Cody grabs my shoulders and pushes me back down gently. "It's okay you don't have to get up."
Cody began taking my vitals without so much as saying a word or even glancing at me.
"I don't bite," I say to ease the tension roaming around in the room. Cody glances at me with a confused look. "You're acting as if I'm some kind of a serial killer who might stab you in your sleep."
His eyes widen in fear and he drops the thermometer he was holding. He takes a step back and opens and closes his mouth a few times. "Why would you think that?" he asks.
I smile at his innocence. Does he really think I'm going to kill him in his sleep? I tilt my head towards the door as I hear it open. Tyler walks in rolling a cart. Once our eyes meet, I smile at him, but he doesn't smile back. Did I do something wrong? Maybe he's just in a bad mood?
"Have you finished taking her vitals?" he asks Cody with a stern look.
Cody nods while picking up the thermometer he dropped earlier. "I'll finish taking the vitals of the other patients." he rushes to leave the room.
As Cody leaves the room, I wait for Tyler to say something. Anything. But he just rummages through the drawers in the cart. Once he finds the things he was looking for, he places them at the top of the cart and walks towards me.
Without as so much as glancing at me, he begins to unwrap the wound on my right arm. As he begins to apply some cream I flinch, not out of pain, but to see if that would get a reaction out of him. But he doesn't even pause or look up. He just continues to apply the cream.
Getting frustrated at him, I decide that I wouldn't be the first one to break the silence. If he wants to be an a**, then let him be an a**.
As he finishes with my right arm and moves to my right ankle he finally speaks. "Is Evelyn your real name?" He doesn't look up as he asks me that.
What kind of a question is that? Of course it's my real name.
"Yeah," I nod.
"What were you doing in Afghanistan?"
Ohh so now you want to talk. "I was a part of doctors without borders."
He stops applying the cream on my ankle, and I think he's about to look at me. But instead he turns around and walks to the cart grabbing another cream. "And you said that you don't know how you ended up here in Russia." he says while resuming his work on my ankle.
I nod but realize he's not looking at me. "Yeah."
For the next fifteen minutes we remain in silence. Tyler continues to change and repack my wounds while I steal glances at him. Once he's done and I expect him to walk away he pulls up a chair and sits next to my bed.
His head is bowed down and he has his hands folded together as if he was praying. Seconds turn to minutes before he finally looks up and actually makes eye contact with me.
"What's the last thing you can remember in Afghanistan?"
Why does he look so stressed, and so...and so confused? "I was working at the hospital," I say as I recall the moment. "There was a loud explosion and I felt the floor caving in. Everything after that is just blank. I don't know when I woke up. But when I did I was locked in a room with a few other girls."
I stare at him waiting for a reaction. But when I don't get much of a reaction I ask, "why are you not saying anything?"
Tyler rubs the back of his neck and pauses before responding to me. "There was a bomb explosion at the hospital you were working at."
Bomb explosion? I raise my eyebrows out of fear...shock? I don't know. But one look at Tyler's face and I know he has more to say.
"Your body was found in the explosion. You were pronounced dead on scene."
My body. Dead. The room was starting to spin and I felt all the blood drain from my face.
"Bu-But I'm right here. And I'm alive." I stutter. "How is that possible?"
"The girl they found and claimed to be you, had her face completely burned off. But she had your white coat with your name on it. And the clothes the girl was wearing, fit the description of what other people gave to the police to what you were wearing that day."
"This just doesn't make sense," I let out a groan. "So what now, I am dead to the world?"
Sighing, he nods his head.
"But I'm not," I yell. "I'm alive, sitting on this bed, talking to you. How am I dead then?"
Tyler doesn't respond. "I don't know whose body they found. But that's not me." I shake my head.
"Then why was that girl wearing your clothes?"
"I don't know." I yell. Why was that girl wearing my clothes? Who would do this to me? Why would someone want to frame me like that? "I don't know." I repeat, but quietly this time.
Thousand of ideas start to run through my head and none of them have a good aspect to it.
"You have to believe me." I quickly say. "I don't know why someone would do this but, I'm the real Evelyn. And I'm alive." I plead.
Tyler grabs both of hands and shifts over sitting next to me on the bed. "I know," he says while wiping the tears from my cheeks that managed to escape. "I believe you."
I wrap my arms around his neck and engulf him into a hug. "Why is this happening to me? Why would someone do this to me?" I cry into his chest.
I feel Tyler's hand rub against my back as he tries to calm me down. "We'll fix this. Okay?"
"How?" I whimper.
Pulling me away from his chest, he cups both my cheeks and wipes away my tears. "I don't know how. But we'll figure out a way."
"You believe I'm the real Evelyn right?" I ask for reassurance.
"I do."

A/N- Chapter not edited, since I rushed to post it up. But anyway, how's your day going? I spent my day by sleeping until 3pm and then watching reruns of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Ohh how I miss my childhood.
