Chapter 4

{Flashback 4 years ago}  Y/n was 11 years old living with the Hughes family at the time and the Elrics had just left for central to do the state alchemist exams so Edward can be a full-fledged alchemist and get his and his brother's bodies back.

  "Hey big brother why did we have to leave Resembool. I like it here and granny and Winry are gonna miss us a lot." Matthew looked at you with sad eyes but smiled. "I have the opportunity to go and work for the military to earn a living. Trisha and Pinako have helped us for so long but now it's just Granny and Winry so I thought why not work for the military and earn some money there. This will help us to get back on our feet just you and me together and we'll send some money back to Granny and Winry for all they have helped us with, I promise." You were still sad but smiled and gave him a big hug. All your life you've lived in Resembool with Edward, Alphonse and Winry. You even had Trisha who was like a mother to you and Pinako was like a grandmother. You loved them both. When Trisha died that was one of the worst days of your life. To have someone like a mother to you get sick and die, all you could do was cry. You were there for the funeral and stayed with the Elrics until the sun went down. You missed her a lot but you had to continue on forward and live out your life. Matthew worked his way up the military and Y/n got to meet many nice people along the way. You got to meet Colonel Roy Mustang the flame alchemist and first lieutenant Riza Hawkeye. But you also met the person that was close enough to be a second father to you. Maes Hughes. The first day you met Hughes you were nervous but soon enough you warmed to him. He took both you and your brother in and treated you both as one of his own. You also treated Elicia as your own little sister and got along with her very well. Everything went well and happy until that fateful day. The day that would haunt you until the end of your days. You had been practicing the alchemy that the Elrics had taught you while you were still living in Resembool with them. Matthew was going on a regular mission in search for a mass murderer, this is the first time he decided to take you along, to see how his job was like thinking it would be another wild goose chase. Matthew was worried that this mission would be too dangerous but you were eager to go with him because you wanted to help him with his alchemy since you had taught him some of the basics. "Um hey Y/n are you sure you want to come with me, wouldn't it be better to stay at home with Gracia and Elicia?" Y/n smiled and hugged her brother's arm. "No big brother I've been learning how to fight so I can help you, I don't want you to fight this alone." Matthew looked at you worriedly but decided to bring you along. The mission turned out well in the beginning until the very end when it was you and your brother vs. an unknown man who had bright red eyes under his sunglasses and tattoos on his right arm and who was very powerful. The enemy struck quickly at you but missed just grazing your arm. You yell out in pain but was still able to fight. You used your alchemy to make sparks come up from the ground to hit him, but you barely missed him. Matthew attacks the enemy swiftly but was caught off guard when you got hit on the left side of your body and fell to the ground and started to yell out loudly in pain. "Y/n!!" Matthew yells for you trying to get your attention. But you were too distracted by the shock and fear and pain that was rising inside of you. You were losing a lot of blood because you got hit in the head, cut on the leg and the side of your body and got even more scratched on your arm. As Matthew was running to you, to support his little sister a surprise attack came from the unknown man who grabbed onto Matthew's face and a second later Matthew's face was blown up from the inside of his body not being able to take a final breath but before he was brutally murdered Matthew quickly said his final words to his little sister, but were muffled from his face almost covered whole by the man's hand. "Keep moving and live." After that blood spewed everywhere and he fell right to the ground in front of your eyes. "BROTHER, NO!!" You had enough energy to  get up and as soon as you could stay a little straight, you ran straight to him and try to hold him up but didn't have enough strength to do so. "No big brother stay with me please I don't want to lose you." Tears start to form at the corner of your eyes. As you start to cry a stream of tears start to flow out of your eyes and onto your brothers lifeless face, you look up eyes red and puffy and see the mysterious man start to walk away but he whispers something under his breath but you could make out what he was saying as he walks away. "This is what happened when you take the path of an alchemist, may God forgive you of all your sins." As you watch him walk away you feel all the anger and sadness boil up inside of you and you start to yell. "YOU BASTARD." All you could remember from your brother's killer were his red eyes and the tattoos on his right arm. You turn back to your brother's lifeless body "No, I can bring you back, I know I can please don't leave me." Y/n yelled in sadness but then she remembered what the Elrics did and she remembered that they taught it to her too. The ultimate taboo. Human transmutation. You didn't care about the consequences you just wanted the only real family you had back. So you committed the taboo and while doing so saw The Gate of Truth.
