The Bet

[Third person's POV]

"The winner of this year Moon title is..."

The auditorium fell into silence. The crowds stopped chanting or cheering for a second. The burning anticipation and intense fervor filled the audience. Every single heart beats throbbed in unison, counting the milisecond that passed while waiting for the announcement. And especially of that one person, Wayo.

Honestly, Wayo really didn't care much about the Moon title. He was not that kind of person. He was comfortable being himself in his own bubble. Having Ming by his side almost made his life complete. That best friend, slash that, loved friend {เพื่อนรัก} of him, was the best thing anyone could have asked for, relating to friend.

But, he needed to win the title for another reason. It was not about fame, not about popularity, and definitely not about getting people's approval. He wanted to win badly that he had been visiting the temple daily for the past one week, so that he could win the bet that he made with Phana and Forth.

Yes, he did his best to win the title, even though not many people had faith in him that he would win. However, Wayo believed, the stars would be lining for him. The unexpected person, usually would win. Just like in those novels, not that he ever read one. He only read One Piece, that was. But didn't it suppose to be like that, in lakorn {ละคร}?

"... Nong... "

Shia! Why can't she just spit it out and stop giving us palpitations, Wayo reprimanded.

"... Ming Kwan, from faculty of engineering, kha!!!"

Ming looked at Wayo with a perplexed and guilty face. He really didn't want to involve in this competition in the first place. But he found his way to get selected in his faculty, defeating other great candidates, to help Wayo to win his love, Phana the last year winner of Moon title. He never put any hope to win the title. He was just doing his best for the sake of responsibility towards his faculty.

And at that moment, Ming felt like he had betrayed his friend. He knew how badly that short guy wanted to win and he knew it very well the reasons behind it. Wayo who was at first, dumbstruck by his lost to the bets,  came back to his sense and looked at Ming's expression. He smiled at the winner and nodded to his best friend, indicating his acceptance. He was happy for Ming, truth to be told. Forth's words were nothing but the truth. Ming had everything to win the title this year.

And he had put his hope high as people said, if you shoot for the star then you will get the moon. He knew everyone had reminded him not to put his hope high so that he wouldn't fall into the pit of disappointment . But he couldn't help himself. He just wanted to win his love. Aren't love supposed to conquer everything?

But Wayo kept clapping his hands zealously for Ming. That was also who he was. Despite his own disappointment, he would always be happy for his friends, especially Ming.

*

Wayo was at the back stage after the event ended. He could go back to his dorm right away but he couldn't just leave Ming behind right? He didn't even manage to congratulate his loved friend properly yet. So, here he was, slouching inside the couch waiting for Ming to finish some photoshoot and perhaps a brief interview from the campus magazine. He was tired but he worried even more.

What will that jerk ask from me?

Wayo was still thinking all the possibilities things that last year University Moon would ask from him. Money? Chocolate? Sushi? Becoming his slave - even though the idea seemed appealing but he won't agree to it! He had some dignity left inside him, not to be a lost puppy tailing of that handsome jerk around.
