Bellatrix watched her mother with large, dark eyes from behind the safety of the curtains.

"Come here, Bella," her mother crooned, coaxing her out of hiding with outstretched fingers. Her expression showed love, but Bellatrix saw the shadow of the rod that was clenched in the hand that she kept behind her back. She knew what was to come. Adamantly, fearfully, she shook her head, her thick black tresses shaking with each motion.

"Come now, Bella. You know the punishment for bringing mudbloods home."

Suddenly, Mrs. Black grasped Bellatrix' arm and dragged her away from safety. Bellatrix whimpered and wept, but she never screamed. Only, when she was in the safety of her room, did she let out a shaky laugh.

Bellatrix sat across from her husband, her back rigid, her food barely touched.

"This isn't what I wanted," he said, his voice low, though not quite dangerous. "I thought you loved me, Bella."

Bella let out a strangled sob, clutching her napkin as though to squeeze her pain out, as she cried, "I do!"

"Don't lie to me!" he shouted, slamming his fist on the table. "I saw you look at that mudblood, as though he could provide what you need!"

Bellatrix fell back, still sobbing, as he advanced, his hand stretched out as though to caress her. But he didn't caress her. Later, as she sat huddled in the safety of her bathroom, nursing familiar old wounds, she let out a shaky laugh, followed by a rasping sob.

The cell was dark and cold, but it felt like home. Bellatrix smiled into the shiny bronze bars of her cage, admiring how her dark hair glistened in the dull light. Azkaban was a prison, but not for her. Azkaban was freedom.

She glanced up in surprise as the dementors moved away from her cell and a new figure appeared. She grinned as several words came to mind; friend, family, savior.

"Bellatrix."

She closed her eyes, relishing in the way her name rolled off the Dark Lord's tongue. And then she giggled.
