Aliza spread out under her favorite sycamore tree, watching fellow students as they walked past. It was a large group of Slytherins, however, who snagged her attention. They were sixth year students, all tall and sniveling. Severus Snape was among them, though he hung back, laughing half-heartedly at their jokes. It was their leader, Mulciber, who first spotted Aliza. He grinned revoltingly and swaggered over to her, the rest of his gang following at a slower pace.

"What do we have here? A Gryffindor out of her cage?" His goons snickered pathetically.

Aliza pointedly ignored them. Instead, she focused her attention on her Herbology notes. However, Mulciber's nasally voice still managed to break through her thoughts.

"Go back to your common room, little girl," he snarled.

"Go back to your common room, Mulciber, and maybe I'll forget that you picked on my friend here."

Aliza's head shot up at the sound of that familiar voice. Sure enough, Sirius Black had slunk out of the shadows and was leaning casually against the trunk of the tree. Mulciber visually shrank back and Severus' eyes narrowed with hatred.

"This isn't over, Black," Mulciber spat as he walked away. "Not for you or your mudblood friend."

Fury washed over Sirius' face and Aliza had to stick her arm out to keep him from lunging after Mulciber.

"He's not worth it," she said, answering the questioning look he was giving her. He stopped struggling.

"Thanks for stepping in, Sirius," Aliza said with a dimpled smile.

"Are you kidding?" Sirius barked out a laugh. "Remus would have killed me if I had let those Slytherins continue bothering you."

He smiled, warming Aliza's heart. What a great friend she had.

Later that night, during supper, there was a huge ruckus at the Slytherin table. Aliza glanced up in time to see Mulciber and his goons rush out of the Great Hall, their faces beginning to bloat. At the corner of the Gryffindor table, James and Sirius were snickering to themselves.

"What was that about?" Remus wondered as he stared after Mulciber and his goons.

"Maybe he picked on the wrong person," she replied innocently. She took Remus' hand and interlaced their fingers, smiling up at him. Sirius looked up, caught Aliza's eye, and winked.
