Sleep should've definitely come easily but it didn't. I was having a hard time dosing off after I had talked to Nate. Realizing how much I just missed him made me want to throw everything to the ground and come back home. But, I didn't—I couldn't. I promised my parents that I would find my parents, and they made Nathan promise to get me a normal life. This was normal as it could get so I couldn't leave.
I couldn't leave the place, but I could, at least, leave the house for a few minutes. It was one-thirty in the morning—the lights were off, and it was so silent that if anything dropped and clanked loudly, I was sure that it would wake everyone up who was here. It was easy getting out of the house, not being spotted by anyone.
I knew that it was going to be easy to walk back, seeing that I already have a map of the town and also that I can remember where I had walked to. It was one of the few things that kept me from being totally lost when I took night walks.
Night walks. It's obvious as to what they are but it's what mom and dad used to call it whenever we did this.
Now, I'm regretting doing this because I'm missing them even more.
That's it, I'm calling Nathan. Reaching for my phone, I don't hesitate to press his number in, waiting for him to answer as the ring continued on for a while.
At the sixth ring, he picks up. At least, I thought it was him until I heard a female's voice. It belonged to Chloe's, my brother's fiancée. "Rose?"
The drowsiness in her voice made me even feel stupid. Why did I call him in the first place? "Hey, Chloe," I greet, mumbling out the words. "Sorry. I shouldn't have called. I, kind of, forgotten that it's late and you and my brother must be sleeping."
"No, it's okay, hey," she pulls me back in before I could pull the phone away from my ear. "Your brother's downstairs, sorting out some business. Do you want to talk to him? I could get him for you, Rose."
This is Chloe for you. Her beauty matched her kindness that she had. I could remember the first meeting her when I was fifteen. I remember hating her guts at first. It was a time wherein my brother just wanted to sleep with chicks and never spend with his teenager sister and so, I immediately came to the conclusion that she was one of those women. She was the perfect toy for my brother—she had volume in her curly blonde hair, big blue eyes, a body like one those Victoria Secret models' body, rocking the being classy and plain clothes.
Then, when she wouldn't go away, I was forced to communicate with her at times when Nate would leave her alone with me. She knew that I hated her but once we got together more and more, the hatred became less and less. I learned to love her like my own sister.
She and my brother were a prefect match. Two peas in a pod. She observant and smart when it comes to things. That's why she immediately saw the reason why I worked for my brother for a long time.
I shake my head even if she couldn't really see me. "No, it's okay, Chloe. Can you do me a favor and don't tell my brother I called? He'll think that I'm having a problem and I don't want him worrying about me. You know how he gets."
"But is there?" When I didn't answer, she clears it up. "A problem, Rose. Is there a problem? You know, you can talk to me. I think of you as like my little sister too so, if you do have a problem, you can talk to me. We were close once, right?"
"Right."
It was true. We were close but that was before everything that happened. That was before everything changed—including me.
