My dad still wasn’t talking to me. Sometimes he didn’t even come home for days at a time. I knew he was with his new girlfriend, but whatever.

I starred absently at my wall of photos. I hadn’t been on my grind in a long while. I barely take pictures anymore – and when I did, they were usually expressing my jumbled emotions. Before my mom died, most of my pictures were in color, and lively – bubbly and happy. When I hung with Jenna they were muted colors mostly, but still clung to some form of happiness. Now they’re dull, sappy, and sad.

My phone buzzed. Something fluttered in my heart like desperation, hoping it was Jenna. Maybe she wasn’t ashamed of me.

It was Meme. That was a wonderful surprise.

                    Meme: You busy?

                    Me: Uh…no. “ )

Meme: Cool. Wanna chill? – me and a few of my old friends are going to a awesome low key burger joint up in Portland! :D

Me: Oh cool…but I’m going to need a ride. :p

Meme: Of course, I mean, what do I look like! Lol, my brother and I will be at your house in twenty minutes tops probably knowing this small town. What’s your address?

I text her my information and get dressed. Just in something casual. Some flare jeans, a off white camisole with a leather jacket. I put my hair up in a sloppy bun. I felt – ugly.  Who was I trying to impress though as Meme said, she wasn’t a critic.

Right on cue twenty minutes later there was a beeping from outside. I look out the window to see a gigantic Chevy truck sitting in my driveway. Meme waved animatedly.

I notice the driver who was obviously way old. He had spiky black hair, a well defined jaw line and a shadow of a faint beard. He seemed very confident and his looks literally paralyzed me. Like he was starring straight in my soul…

There was a loud honking noise and I had realized Meme had leaned over and started blaring the horn, startling every fiber in my body making me jump involuntarily. Meme and the driver – presumably her brother visibly began laughing. I flush with anguish and make my way over to the truck.

I get in next to Meme, and she smiles widely.

“Fallon this is Gavin, my brother.”

I had realized Gavin looked nothing like Meme. I actually did a double take as we backed out.

“I’m adopted…” Meme mumbled with a faint smile.

                    “Oh – I –”

“Let’s play some music,” Gavin interjected, turning the volume up on the radio. Sitting in the car I took in the smells—there was definitely a scent of masculinity—if you can smell that. It was like wood, pine, mint, spices, and soap. It was hard to describe.
