Chapter 5: The Sleepless City

The sun was up. It was 6 at dawn. Horns were honking, birds were signing, the leaves of Sequoia trees were swaying and best of all, a fair weather was observed. Luckily, it was a Saturday- the day the students feast upon. It was a warm and humid day. People usually slept, felt the day off, and of course, ate. Well, these rules for a Saturday were all effective except for someone that is- Hyza Quasee, 18 years old, Irvine, California. She always let the days pass one by one without bothering what day it was- as if she doesn’t care. Well, to let her remember and to be on tract, Elane always reminded her- her 16 year old younger sister. Since it was Saturday, she followed her “Daily schedule for weekends” which started with going inside her bedroom, locking it and wrote in her diary which stated:

11th of November, 2011. It has been a year since the youngest sister of our family has gone missing. This year, she is already turning 6 since she was 5 when my mother last saw her.No traces were found. No data was gathered- A cold case. I and my sister are still in America studying in University in California, Irvine where we spent our high school studying. Originally, I grew up in Okinawa, Japan but was born with a bit of British blood. My father is from England and my mother is from Japan which made me dual citizen. When I was eight, sadly, my father filed a case of divorce due to personal problems with our mother and never showed up ever again. We never knew how he is right now. Being a widow, my mother let both of us siblings study in America so she could give us a bright future and show to our father that it will always be fine even when he’s gone. Well, it’s an advantage for mom since she doesn’t have to take care of us both. Now, I am in my senior years in High school and Elane is still in 10th grade. Since my youngest sister, Yviene was born, we never got see her. My mother won’t let me and Elane travel back home because of the great amount of money we would use for our flight back. She decided to use the money to for Yviene’s studies and in exchange for us to stay here in America and continue to study. Well, I never though that one day, I would realize that home was home and America was apparently, NEVER GOING TO BE MY HOME. I realized that his world confuses me a lot. A lot of bad things happen without any reason why. A young little girl- kidnapped for no reason. Bloodshed. Hatred. Wars. Conflicts. Robbery. Bribery. Lust and all others. All this, and we don’t even know the reason why.      Question marks. Question marks everywhere. ~ Hyza.

She closed her diary and kept it back under the sheets of her bed to keep anyone from seeing it. It kept all of her emotions in all those pages. Hyza wasn’t the typical school girl who wakes up, be ready and fashionable in school and flirt with guys. These mark a big NO for her. She just studies a lot and has the attitude “emo” in her. Opposite goes for Elane. She’s the one who supports her sister and keeps on smiling even if troubles await her. In short, the older sister’s pessimistic, while the younger is optimistic- A rare combo.

While Hyza was lying down on her bed staying silent as usual, her sister Elane planned to come in. there was a knock on the door.

          “Open up.” Said Hyza.

She opened he door, and let herself in.

“Hmm… you still look emotionless as usual sis.” Replied Elane.

“I’m always like this. Especially today that is. It’s a special day for me to be depressed.” Hyza said with an ironic voice. “Do you know what day is it to day?”

“November 11th- the day Yviene disappeared.”

“I guess you still keep on tract. Guess you didn’t’ forget.”
