Chapter Four

“Surprise”

“Darcy!” I called as I saw him walking at the corridor of the school.

He turned around and looked at me gravely as if saying “why the hell?!” I laughed. He doesn’t want to be called by his second name and I intentionally did it to annoy him.

“Hey! How was the conference?” I welcomed Ian with the highest energy. A week has passed and we’re ready to tease each other again.

He looked happy as he is always but this time it’s not the usual him being happy. I wonder what it is.

He smiled broadly showing his almost perfect teeth as he fixed his hair almost meeting his eyes. He has white complexion and black hair almost the same length as Justin Bieber’s.

“Hey! I missed you all! Did you miss me too? I have lots of stories to tell!” he excitedly said wearing that same smile he left a week ago before we parted. I saw his eyes twinkle as he talked about the conference he has been.

“Miss you? I didn’t even notice you were gone for a week!” I joked. In fact I missed laughing with him. I never imagined that a week could be so long we have so many stories to tell to each other.

He told me about the award he had won when he was at the conference and the experience that it gained him, friends he made and a lot of funny stuffs of course.

In return, I told him about the quizzes he had missed and all about the intense trekking we had last weekend and said he was so lucky he did not experienced it. He laughed mischievously at my statement.

When we were about to part, he told me something that struck me.

I didn’t have the energy to reply to what he said and I just smiled weakly.

I was happy when I saw him until that moment. I did not expect that it would happen in just a week.

After he told me that, my mind wandered and I felt lost. Something inside me hurts but hasn’t figured out what. Today is just two weeks away from my birthday.

“Hello! Earth calling Deniisse!” Hanna, one of my close friends said, prolonging saying my name to get my attention which was wandering in space for about an hour now.

We were walking to the bus stop from school and we usually go home together since her house is along my way home.

“What?” I retorted leaving my thoughts in space.

“What’s the matter?” she asked curiously.

 I couldn’t say there’s nothing wrong because we’re close and she knows when something’s up.

Besides, it’s all written in my face so I decided to tell her everything Ian told me that happened when he was away. I told her the story the way Ian narrated them to me.

“WHAT?!, he had a girlfriend he met at the conference?! You said it was just a week! How could he—“she paused and looked at me.

“Wait, you told me you two are not together right? So why are you acting like…” she stopped looking at the sad expression on my face.

“I think I’m hurt” I said with a fake weak laugh.

“tell me about it”

“I don’t know. It was kinda hit my heart when he told me he already has a girlfriend.”

“Oh my gosh, are you in love with him?”

“No! Oh my God no of course not!” I said defensively.

“Really? Then why are you acting like it?”

“I- I don’t know. I guess I’m.. I’m used to being too close with him and now that he’s with someone.. ugh.”

“You like him. Do you?”

“I don’t know…” I said leaving a sigh.
