“C’mon Giselle! We’re gonna be late!” Charlotte called from the downstairs.

“Yeah coming!” Giselle called back, as she tied her hair up in a neat ponytail. She grabbed her beach chair and sandals and skipped down the stairs. Luna was by the door as Charlotte picked up her beach chair and joined her.

The three friends were on summer vacation in Japan. They had booked a bungalow on a random beach along the coastline of the Land of the Rising Sun. even better – Luna’s dad had booked an entire exclusive beach just for them! Which means they could do whatever they liked without any weird glances from strangers!

The three of them ran out onto the warm sand and laid their chairs out. Giselle threw her towels and slippers on her chair without even stopping. She couldn’t wait to grab her surfboard and ride the waves.

“Hey, Giselle! Don’t you want to sunbathe for a while?” Luna called after her, settling in her comfortable chair.

Giselle barely turned around as she responded, “Nah, I'm going out in the water! See ya…”

“Wait!” Charlotte stopped her, and she turned around. “At least take your phone with you, in that tool belt of yours.”

“Ah…” Giselle strode back over to her chair and picked up her phone. She dropped it into one of the pockets in her brother’s tool-belt. Leo had given it to her the day he went into war, the day he bravely fought and… the day he…

Giselle shook her head trying not to think about those memories. There was nothing she could do about it. It had been five years already and… well, she turned out alright, didn’t she?

She exhaled and strapped her tool-belt securely around her waist. The best part was that the belt could carry many things in it without adding extra weight. When she put anything in the pockets, the item simply disappeared. If she wanted anything specific all she had to do was stick her hand in one of the pockets and wish for the item, and it would appear right in her hand. Even if it got wet, its contents remained dry. Giselle loved her toolbelt.

She picked up her surfboard and said a quick goodbye to her friends before racing down the beach into the shallow water. She lay down on her board and paddled till she got the required balance. As the wave approached, she cautiously stood up, straightened her surfing one-piece and took her stance. Oh, she felt so free in the open waters!

She had a love for the sea since childhood. Mom and Leo would take her surfing almost every day. She was a near expert now.

The wave came crashing down as Giselle weaved and cut her way through the saline water. Soon enough she was drenched from head to toe. A few more waves came along and she surfed rode them skilfully.

It was a while before she realised the waves were becoming taller.

  And taller.

  And rougher.

  Rougher beyond high tide.

Giselle swam to her surfboard and watched the waves. No, they were too tall for comfort…

All of a sudden the ground shook. It shook very violently. The water rose to new heights and towered high above her. She swirled around in the waves, desperately clinging on to her board for support.

“Please tell me that’s not what I think it is…” she sputtered.

  It was.

  It was a tsunami.

Japan was very well known for tsunamis, but who knew that their luck would bring them a tsunami when they were visiting?

“AAAAAAAH!” Giselle cried as she struggled to stay afloat. The waves kept crashing down on her, pulling her under. She was finding it difficult to breathe…

Just as she lost her consciousness, she hit a hard object.
