CHAPTER 7

"Hey," Giselle plopped down next to Harry.

Harry glanced at her before nodding and looking out the window yet again.

"Ohhhkay… so why're you avoiding me?"

  No response.

  “Harry!”

  Nothing.

“Are all Gods so arrogant? I thought you were different.” Giselle decided to play with his emotions to get him to talk.

It worked. Harry whipped around to face her and the crease between his eyebrows deepened. “I – am – not – arrogant!” He whisper-shouted. Giselle cocked an eyebrow before folding her arms and lifting her chin, looking ahead. “All Gods are,” she said, proud of her theory. She heard Harry sigh and slump back against the expensive leather seat. “What do you want?” he mumbled.

“To know why you’re ignoring me.”

  “I am not ignoring you.”

  “Yes, you are.”

He faced her with raised eyebrows. “Oh really, am I ignoring you right now?”

“Now that you’re not, tell me why you’re mad at me.”

Harry scoffed. “Mad at you?” his voice quietened towards the end. Giselle inhaled deeply and scooted closer to the Sea God. “I’ve noticed that since we pulled you out of the burning ship, you’ve been mad at me. No no no, it’s evident from your attitude, don’t bother repudiating it.” She sighed, “Look, all I wanna know is if I did something wrong. I want to know why I upset you – ”

“Why?” Harry sat up. “Why do you want to know? Why are you so obstinate to know the answer?”

For once Giselle was at a loss for words. “W-well, I dunno, I-I guess – I guess I just don’t like getting on people’s bad side, you know?” she said slowly.

After a brief silence, Harry muttered, “It is not you…”

Giselle’s head shot up. Harry turned to face her slowly. “Actually, it is you, I guess… I do not know.” His head dropped into his hands. He rubbed his face with his large palm and finally looked at her. “Look, we gods, we keep a watch on you mortals. Some we ignore, some we eagerly watch. Some are on our good list, the other on our bad list.”

  “Like Santa?”

Harry looked at her, exasperated, but a small smile managed to creep its way to his lips. “Yes, Valdez, like Santa. And we keep these lists for various reasons – which I am forbidden from disclosing – but one of the primary reasons is in case we get stranded on the Earth somehow. In such a situation, it was decided that we first figure out where exactly on earth we are, then we begin looking for people in the area who are on our good list.”

“So you essentially remember all the names?” Giselle questioned, intrigued.

“Again, that is God stuff, I am not at liberty to reveal our secrets.”

“Alright,” Giselle raised her hands in submission. “So, this good list – what exactly does it have to do with the matter at hand? I mean, you haven’t answered my question yet.”

Harry nodded. “The good list contains the names of people all over the earth who Gods like us can rely on. People who care for others, never hesitate to help, who are always truthful, loyal, cheerful, positive – in short, if a God required help when he or she was stranded on earth, such people would definitely help.” Harry had slowed down by the end. “Does any of this sound… familiar?”
