Chapter 16- It'll be alright, kitten
*Alexis POV*
Out of the corner of my eyes I notice my phone light up again, Kyle's name flashing across the screen. I still can't get myself to answer it, my shaking hands to busy trying to hold myself together. The panic has taken over my body as I sit in the small coffee shop bathroom.
Damn it! I had prepared myself so long for this moment, the moment I would meet the man who took away everything I had and then almost killed me. But the moment I saw him all my rage towards him was replaced with panic and fear.
Another violent shake pass through my body, and then suddenly the first tears I've shed since he beat me up trickle down my cheeks.
A sharp knock on the door startles me and I try to muffle my cries.
"Lexie? Are you in there? Come on, let me in." I'm surprised to hear Kyle's voice through the grey, dirty bathroom door. His soothing tone gets me to rise from the dirty floor, wipe the tears of my cheeks and then unlock the door. At the sight of my read eyes and tear stained cheeks he engulfs me in a big hug, his strong arms wrapped completely around me, leaving no room between us.
"Oh Lexie, what happened to you?" His big hands rub my back soothingly as I sob into his shirt.
"He was there." My voice was barely audible but he heard me, and instantly tensed up.
"Let's get you out of here kitten." I'm too upset to really notice the new nickname he gave me as he leads me out of the shop, shielding my face from people's stares, with his arm securely wrapped around my shoulders.
After ten minutes of Kyle trying to keep me upright to get us home and failing because of the sobs wracking my whole body, he eventually just lifts me up in his embrace and carries me home. When we step through the doors I hear a familiar gasp, but I'm too caught up in my panic attack to really care.
*Kyle's POV*
"Alexis! Oh my God, what happened to her?" Will's annoying voice makes me stop in my path toward the elevator, shifting Alexis in my arms so that her face is turned into my chest, shielding her terrified face from his prying eyes.
"Nothing, she just has the flu. I'm gonna take care of her, don't worry." I try to keep my tone even and calm so that he'll move out of my way.
"Are you sure? Can I talk to her?" He's now blocking my path and my annoyance builds. If he doesn't get out of the way soon I'm gonna flip.
"Yes, I'm sure she's fine. She's sleeping. Now move, I need to get her into bed." I can tell that he's intimidated by my irritated tone, because he immediately, though reluctantly, moves away and head back to the reception.
"Just call the reception if you need anything." He calls back to me. I nod sharply and then proceed to the elevator.
When we arrive at our floor I shift her over so that I'm only holding her with my left arm while I unlock the door. I continue into the apartment and when I reach the sofa I put her down softly, then sit next to her hesitantly, afraid that I might spark an unwanted reaction. She surprises me though, and move closer to me, burying her head in my shirt and hugging me. I pull her closer and gently stroke her hair with one of my hands, the other rubbing her back.
We sit in silence for a while, her violent sobs calming down to soft sniffles. Her tears keep flowing, and I'm pretty sure my shirt is soaked but I don't care. All that matters is that she's alright, which she clearly isn't. We're a team, it's my responsibility to take care of her.
Suddenly she stirs and rises from her lying position on my chest. Her beautiful eyes are bloodshot, swollen and puffy and tear stains cover her cheeks. Even though she's been crying for hours she somehow still looks stunning.
"Thank you. For being there. I don't know what I would've done if-" Her voice breaks and I pull her into my chest once again.
"It's okay kitten, it's okay." I rub her back to calm her down which seems to work pretty well.
"I just- I had everything planned for when I would finally see him again. I was so sure that I would keep calm but as soon as I spotted him I went into full panic mode." She sobs.
"No matter how much you prepare, you will never be ready to face the reason of your nightmares." I whisper.
"Did he see you? what did he say to you?" A lump of worry forms in my stomach at the though of him finding her and finish what he started.
"No, when I saw him I ran away instantly. I will probably loose my job and blow this whole mission, just because I'm weak." She cries.
"You're not weak kitten. You won't loose your job or blow the mission. I'll call your office, tell them that you got food poisoning and will be there tomorrow and then I'll call my dad and make sure he finds out what he is doing here in New York. But sweetie, I'll need to know his name." I tell her tentatively.
"His name is Tom Jenkins." She whispers and I choke on my breath.
Shit.
