Unedited.
When Sophie woke up, she could smell the heavy and burning smell of onions. She kicked off the blankets, passed Alvar at the stove and into the bathroom. She dry heaved, "What even is that?!" She shouted gagging at the smell. "Well I heard it gets rid of sickness." Alvar said. "Get rid of it." Sophie coughed. Sophie heard the front door open and close, than open and close again. "Gone." Alvar said, passing but the bathroom. Sophie found the door with her foot and kicked it shut, in Alvar's face.
"Rude." He scoffed, through the door. "Youth water?" He asked. Sophie needed water, she didn't care how sick eyed get, she needed to get the poison out. She opened the bathroom door where Alvar waited with an already open bottle and a closed one. She grabbed them both before closing the door again. It felt as if a desert had been living in her mouth.
"Alrighty then." Alvar said. Sophie heard his footsteps retreating from the bathroom, door she felt the water going down and true poison coming up.
For the rest of the day, Sophie stayed locked in the bathroom, Alvar only checking on her when she was to quiet, or to loud, and the subject of dinner.
Three days...passed the same and Sophie felt the last of the poison leave her body, but it left her weak and painfully thin. It was like she was a former shell of herself. More furniture had showed up, as the days had passed, Alvar slept in a cot near the door, a small round table had been set in the kitchen, two chairs, plates, cups, and silverware which were ways locked in the drawer.Sitting chairs, and even carpet. Sophie found herself sitting on the bed she had somehow stolen from Alvar, with one of his thick cloaks wrapped around her. Alvar had given her a pen to her asking, so long as she promised not to stab him with it. Sophie's journal was in her lap. She watched as Alvar sat in one of the sitting chairs, reading. His brown hr sticking up from behind the book. Sophie looked at her journal and started writing.
She explained where she at, what she could see, how she felt, how she got there, how she wanted to reach out to Fitz, but couldn't. She explained how it felt like a blanket muffling their connection, she could just feel the connection enough to hear the tone of his voice, but not what he said. It as so frustrating! She explained the sound of the fire place popping the crinkle of paper whenever she or Alvar turned a page, the scratching of her pen, that echoed through the now cozy shack.
"Why are you looking like you're going to tear that journal in half any moment?" Alvar's voice was light, but there was hidden caution behind it. "Can I go outside?" Sophie asked snapping the book shut, and claim it closed with the pen. Alvar set his book in his lap. "Hhmm..." He stared Sophie over, her tangled hair, her clothes which were starting to smell permanently of poison. "Tomorrow." He promised picking his book up. "Is Sandor okay?" Sophie asked staring at the holes in her pants and others where the trackers had been torn out. Her registry necklace gone, and nothing, no way for her to be found. "Besides crawling over every inch of Havenfield, and being in an incredibly grumpy mood he's fine." Alvar said.
"So Keefe is a spy?" Alvar frowned, setting his book back in his lap, he spoke. "No. Keefe returned to you of his own free will. He hasn't tried to contact us since."
"But someone in Havenfield is a spy?" Sophie asked. A sickening smile twisted Alvar's lips. "Yes, can you guess who?" With that he lifted his book again, leaving Sophie desperate for answers.
Who could possibly be a spy? Certainly not Grady or Edaline, absolutely not Dex. Sandor was her body guard, he took care of her. But she didn't even know half the residences of Havenfield.
Sophie sat for hours, remembering every face she'd ever seen at Havenfield. She began to second guess herself...the people she loved, the kind souls she came in contact with. Alvar seemed to know the internal battle she was having, and didn't even bother to hide his amusement. He watched as Sophie argued d battled with herself. Slowly splitting herself in two.
