It was a nice morning in Hawkins, Indiana, there was no trouble, the children were off to school. Everything was quiet, as it should, until it wasn't. The Wheelers got the call first.
Karen Wheeler was the first that was up, she got up a little bit late, she assumed her son and daughter got up for school. She soon got a call from the school, so she picked up the phone "hello? This is Karen Wheeler". The other voice responded with haste "yes Mrs. Wheeler this is Mrs. Liza from the Attendance Office, I have noticed your son Mike Wheeler has been reported absent, is there a reason for it?". She sighed "one second ma'am" then she covered the mouth piece on the phone yelled up to Mikes room "Mike Wheeler come down this instant!". When Mike didn't respond she got a bit worried, Karen responded to the lady "oh, um, yes I'm sorry my son has a fever". The lady replied "oh, okay, thank you Miss, goodbye". Karen said her goodbyes, When Karen went in to her sons room, she found her son absent from the room. Karen searched the entire house and found nothing, almost like he had never been there at all. Karen noticed so many things, her sons bike was in fact in the garage, Mikes radio was missing, various assortments of food was missing and so was a duffel bag. She suspected that her son ran away but couldn't be certain.
The Byers got a phone call as well, but no one was there to pick up the phone so they didn't know, they wouldn't until later. Jonathan was called to the office and he was handed a letter addressed to his mother "your brother wasn't at school today and no one picked up the phone at the house". Jonathan could only nod. Then Jonathan was excused back to his class, left wondering what might have caused Will to not go to school as this was not like him at all. Soon Jonathan was out of school and Jonathan looked all over, but he never found him. Joyce was supposed to get off around 9 o'clock and Jonathan wasn't sure what he was supposed to do. He, like Karen found the same thing, a missing duffel bag, missing food and the bike was there while the super-com was gone. Jonathan was on his way to see the Chief, when he was at the station he heard "my son Mike Wheeler is missing! I think he ran away!". Then Jonathan, though not wanting to think of it as a real possibility, realized it might be the answer to his question, it did make sense.
