Hopper was baffled by the sight in front of him, Karen Wheeler and his stepson Jonathan Byers both claiming their kid/brother was missing along with various things they'd take if they were to be out for long. Hopper wasn't sure what to say or do, but he just decided to tell them that he's get to work on it right away. He asked his officers to set up a search party and they would go search after they posted up fliers, hoping someone would do their job for them. Everything rung back to 1983, but now, 2 kids were missing, and by the looks of it, it suggested that they may have run off together, of their own volition. But fast forward one day and everyone knew about their disappearance, but no one had the answers they hoped they'd have, so they decided to have a search party comb through the woods. They went until they were sure they were past the city limits and well after dark, but they didn't find the boys, it was like they never even existed, Hopper suspected the Hawkins Lab of having something to do with them but brushed them aside and would only investigate if they were pointed into the place. Another day goes by and someone comes to the police department with a page, partly covered in mud but the girl who brought in the notebook page seemed confident with the finding. So Hopper took the notebook page and read through it, and this was what it read.
'I can't live like this anymore it's eating at me... El's gone, and I don't feel like I want to be here anymore, nothing is keeping me here Other than Will, I told him about... Of course he didn't agree, why would he? I know he wants to... I don't want to lie to myself anymore than I already have. I... Will, it feels so good to finally come to terms with that, finally, it's been freed from deep inside of me.'
That's all he could read, the rest and all the blanks were up for best guesses, Hopper thanked the girl and then she left. This had to be Mike, he knew Mike had this love for the girl from the lab, he would be the type to have a journal after something like that week. Hopper could have guessed at some of the last blanks but he couldn't be for sure, so he left them up. He put the page up for evidence after he photoed it, in case it was ripped or something, it sure looked fragile. It sure seemed like a motive to him though, someone you love is gone and the only reason you're there is because of your best friend and he decides to leave too? Seemed like the motive was there and it made perfect sense, but then he thought 'if there was one ripped page... There's gotta be more right?'. Hopper decided to look for anymore clues, luckily the girl said she found it while wandering around the highway, one that led to a pit-stop another one, then to a town, it made sense, so he alerted the next town over, hoping the boys hadn't already gotten through it before they could have looked for them.
