Chapter 8

My public humiliation

Meredith's POV

"Guys! Why don't you join the astronomy club??It's damn cool" I said in an animated way. "I'll pass" said Becca awkwardly. "I..... I.....don't know " stammered Ellie. "Please" I said trying my best puppy dog eyes. "Since all the other clubs look boring...um.......maybe" said Ellie. "Yay" I cheered as I gave her a big smile. "I still haven't said yes "said Ellie meekly. "Meredith" someone tapped my shoulder. "Yeah, Jennie?" I said when the blonde looked at me excitedly. "You've got to give a club selection speech on Friday. What?? "Tomorrow's Friday!!" I exclaimed. "Yup, come here I'll explain you what to do" she said pulling me towards a corner.

For five minutes she explained to me about the speech, what to say, what not to say. I protested but she was determined not to leave me alone. After ten minutes of arguing I finally agreed.

"Aw, I'll be absent tomorrow so I can't hear you speak" said Ellie. "That's so cool. At least you won't be there during my public humiliation " I said. It was only a joke then. I had no idea what kind of humiliation I really had to face. "You'll be fine" said Joseph, ruffling my hair. I shook my head.

The school was over. Dad came to pick me up as usual. I did my daily activities and went to bed.

"MEREDITH GRAND!!! Wake up this instant" yelled my mom. I lazily woke up and looked at my alarm clock. It was already 8:30. I ran to the bathroom and brushed my hair clumsily. I can't believe I slept in for that long. Ugh!

I quickly hopped into the car. My dad usually drives fast but today he was driving unusually slow. "Faster dad. Faster" I panicked. "Keep calm, Meri. We don't want to land in hospital, do we?"he asked with a smile. "Whatever " I mumbled and took out my speech to practice. After driving for 15 long minutes, we finally reached school. "Bye , dad. Love you" I said as I hopped off the car. I ran to the homeroom ,made up some lame excuse and got inside. I was unusually tired today. I kept on spacing out and felt really sleepy.

"Meredith, are you alright? You've been spacing out a lot lately " asked Becca worriedly. "Nah I'm fine. Just a little dizzy" I replied in an energetic way. But I was really very dizzy and tired. I felt so......faint. "You have to give a speech right? Are you prepared?"asked Joseph. Oh shit! I totally forgot about it. "Yeah"I replied confidently. Oh-oh. I am not at all prepared. "Good" said Joseph ruffling my hair. The lunch break was over and it was speech-time. Ugh! Soon I was in the line with rest of the club presidents. That sneaky weirdo(Jennie) made me the club president without even asking me.

I watched patiently as people delivered their speech. I noticed that nobody was paying the slightest bit of attention until Zander came. People were chanting "NIARCHOS" "NIARCHOS" on top of their voice. "GOOD AFTERNOON, FLORECENT " Zander yelled. The whole crowd went wild. I didn't know Zander was that popular. "If you're popular and good in football then this club is just for you. Join now now. THE FOOTBALL CLUB". Oh god. That isn't even a proper speech. But the crowd was going wild. After Zander was gone, everybody started chatting again and were not paying attention . So I could just splutter rubbish in front of the crowd and no one would notice. It was gardening club's turn and after that, mine. The gardener club boy gave a very nice speech but no one cheered.

Oh-oh. My turn now.I walked towards the podium nervously and held the mic. Everyone's attention was on me. Oh no. I could see Zander pointing at my socks and snickering."Hey, I'm Meredith Grand, president of the astronomy club. So...if you are good in astronomy or if you like to....um....observe...stars then this club is just for you. Interested people, please write your names and give it to me" I said awkwardly and blushed. I could hear so many people laughing. I turned around to go but then a voice said "Stop. You didn't tell us what your club really is about, it's objective, and when to submit our names". I turned to see the owner of the voice and it was none other than Zander. That jerk. Who would give such detailed speech anyways? It was just a club selection speech.

I held the mic again to answer his question when his 'so called' friend, Kassie yelled "You're not capable of making a speech so just get lost. You don't belong here". "Yeah! Loser" yelled Zander. After that half of the school was chanting "loser....loser". This was so not happening.

After that, my temper flared up. I ignored all the laziness and dizziness I felt and clutched the mic. Everyone stopped laughing and chanting. "Oh! What was so funny? Can anybody tell me what's going on here? I also want to join on this joke" I said in a chirpy voice with amused expression. "Oooh! Now I get it. You guys were laughing at me because I was kinda nervous, well , I was really nervous. But that's what you people do. Laugh at others WHEN YOU'RE NO BETTER THAN THEM " I yelled with confidence. I turned to look at the faces of constantly bullied people. "They think they're popular, superior than us. But in reality they're the weakest and most pathetic people. So all the people there, who are constantly bullied for no any reason other than entertaining the 'so called' popular people, I recommend you to fight, fight against the bullies and show them we're better, so much better than them". I could here so many cheers and hooting. Suddenly dizziness hit me again. I staggered down and before I knew, angry tears were starting to pour out of my eyes. Even though how much I hated Zander, I took him as a friend. I.....trusted him. I never expected he would go this far with the bullying.

But now I really hate him. I hate him so damn much, I despise him. "Are you ok?"asked a voice, snapping me out of my thoughts. Without looking at the owner of the voice, I shook my head. "I feel......d.....dizzy. So.....dizzy" I muttered. After that a heavy feeling made me lose my consciousness.
