A vibrant blue
On her touchscreen phone.
He messaged her first,
A brilliant gold,
Her smile wedged in the corner
Of his mind.
Same school,
Same grades,
Same subjects.
Different teachers,
Different classrooms,
Different proms.
Eyes deceiving,
Screen protective,
The alphabet the Cupid's arrows.
Because his rich chocolate skin,
Didn't matter to her.
Because her hair a halo
Is beauty to him.
It's 2017,
But people still don't understand that
Love has no boundaries,
Race doesn't define everything.
It's 2017,
And they still give couples,
A black,
A white,
A second glance.
Because people just don't understand,
That Superman may fly in heaven,
That the loser wins sometimes,
That Romeo and Juliet's death
Brought peace in between.
But they did,
So they did.
Jumping off to fly,
Winning against moonlight,
Romeo and Juliet,
Tonight.
Dead.
