Rise of the Demigod (A Writing Competition)

Round 5 - Entries

Miranda Brander

"We are here. San Francisco" Evelyn said joyfully.

I smile as we walk through the streets. It's not long before it starts getting dark and we need to find a place to stay. I soon spot a motel nearby. "Look a motel" I say pointing at it.

"Good eye Miranda", said Aubry as we start walking towards it. We get some rooms and stay the night

The next morning We get up the next morning and leave the and motel ready to find the underworld. We weave around strangers. We are walking when come to a building with two doors. Its also has a two-headed statue in front of it. We know this is where we are supposed to be, but we don't know what door to take. We think a bit before the statue speaks.

My door leads where you want to go, while his leads into darkness that never ends.

​ The left head says confidently. We turn to look at what the right head has to say.

My door leads to the underworld, while his leads to certain death.

​ It says grimly. The statue starts to snap and bicker for us to choose.

"Please both of you. Keep calm so we can talk this over" says Monica.

The left head hits her and she goes flying, crashing into a pole. She is definitely injured. We quickly hudle around Monica and hold her in a tight embrace as we decide which door to enter. "I think we should go through the right one", I begin " I would rather face darkness if we are wrong than certain death"

Aubry and a couple others agree with me. Before we can tell the statue what we decide someone speaks up. " We are going through the left door" whispers Ginny.

I glare at her and shake my head. "It's not safe through that door", I tell her before turning to the statue and walking up to it.

The group stands behind me as I tell the statue our decision. "We choose the right door",I say with an unexpected boldness.

The statue nods it's head and the right door opens. I motion for everyone to follow me before walking through the door. When we enter, we are faced with a gloomy place with what I think are souls in it. I grin widely while we walk into the elevator. It takes us where we need to go. This is going to be interesting.

When I woke up, I noticed that everyone was silent. I groan as I sit up and say, "What happened? Besides the fact that I passed out from shadow traveling." Everyone averted their eyes away from me. I start to get nervous and say, "Guys, what happened?" 

Aubry, the daughter of Ares looks me in the eyes with her brown ones and says, "Grace.... she sacrificed herself for you. A hellhound came and none of us could get to you in time, so she jumped in front of it, and slayed the hellhound and died from a fatal wound to the chest." I sit there in shock of what I just heard.

I look down at my lap and say, "Let's go save our camp." When I look up I realize that my eyes are watering up. I ask with a raspy voice, "Does anyone have an idea on how we get to San Fransisco?" 

Miranda says, "I'm not trying to complicate things, but we can't take a plane. Because of the 'Zeus and Poseidon rivalry' thing." She then continues, "Nothing says that we can't take a bus though!" She gives us a cheeky grin. We all look at eachother have a silent understanding, and start looking for a bus stop.

(TIME SKIP)

When we are on a bus, I start thinking about all of my friends, 'Grace, Aelin, Aaron, Ginny, Fox, Monica, Evelyn, Rue, Eliston,  Bellamy, Hadley, Cassiopeia, and Alexandra.' That's when it hits me, I turn to Miranda and Aubry and say, "I just realized that one of us will survive, and I just want to say that I am grateful to have met you guys." They look at me shocked. Miranda says, "Why do you sound like you won't be the one in the prophecy? We all have a chance to be the one." I nod my head and say, " I just wanted to get that out of the way in case I do end up dying." Miranda nods and Aubry says, "I understand where you're coming from. I also want you both to know that I am honored to have been with warriors like you guys, and our comrades." 

(TIME SKIP)

The bus stopped and we were at Mt. Tamalpais again. We all shudder at the thought of our friends dying here. We enter the ruins of Mt. Othrys and hear Atlas the titans bellowing. Miranda looks at us and says, "Let's avoid that, yeah?" I look at her with a smile and say, "No, we march right towards him." She looks at me like I'm insane. I then say, "Sarcasm." Miranda looks at me and smiles in understanding, and we go in an opposite direction of the titan's bellowing. 

We enter a room when we hear two voices. A loud voice says, "My door leads you to where you want to go, while his leads into darkness that never ends." The more subdued, quiet voice says, "My door leads to the Underworld, while his leads to certain death." Miranda grimaces and says, " This must be Janus. Annabeth was telling me about him. He offers you two difficult choices and you have to choose one." I try to remember wht the lines in the prophecy were and I remember that, Grace gave me a copy of the prophecy that she wrote down. I quickly pull off my pack and look for it.

I'm scrambling through my pack when I hear Janus' left head's voice cheerfully say, "Looking for this?" I jerk my head up to see my copy in his hands. I start to yell at him, but he cuts me off and says, "No cheating!" He then takes it and holds it above the torch letting it burn. He looks at us with a smile and says, "Now we can play!" His other head says, "Just choose please." 

I start mumbling, "To find the door you seek, to find the door you seek,to find the door you seek. DANGIT! I can't think." Aubry says, "I'm going with left dude." Miranda starts sputtering, "You can't! It might not be the right one!" Janus' left head giggles and says, "She's made her choice!" Aubry smiles at us and goes through the left door. Janus' left side chuckles and says, " Who wants to go next?" I feel Aubry's life force going out, and come to a conclusion. I yell out, "BEWARE THE BOLD BUT TRUST THE MEEK!" I turn to Miranda and say, "Let's go in the one on the right." She nods her head and we enter through the door on the right.

When we get through the door I see the bank of the River Styx. I stare in shock and say, "Holy Hades." We approach the bank of the river and see Charon. He turns to us, gives us an eerie smile, and says, "Need a ride?"
