The Verb 'Ser'

Changing a verb form to match its subject is called conjugating. These are the conjugations of the verb ser, meaning 'to be'.

yo soy = I am

tú eres = you are

usted es = you are (formal)

él es = he is

ella es = she is

ustedes son = you are (formal)

ellos son = they are

ellas son = they are (all female)

The conjugated forms (remember, conjugated just means changed from the core verb. Like 'to be' in english is changed to 'is', 'are', and 'am'.) of the verb are used with nouns or their corresponding pronouns.

(Example: "El señor González es de Chile." or "El es de Chile." or "El profesor es de Chile.")

Remember that Spanish speakers sometimes leave out the subject pronoun.

(Example: "Es de Chile." = "He's from Chile.)

To make a sentence say the opposite, place the word no just before the verb.

(Example: "No estoy bien." is a negative sentence, while "Estoy bien." isn't negative sentence.)
