THE (FINALLY) HAPPY LIFE OF EL BYERS-HOPPER
CHAPTER THREE: JOYCE BYERS

-----------------

Joyce Byers, her adoptive mother, was the mother figure in her life that she needed. Joyce always wanted a daughter, even though she was blessed with two beautiful boys.

-----------------

31st October - 1st November 1984

The first time Joyce Byers saw El after she disappeared was when the boys and Max all came to her home, was El wrapped up with Max's sheet costume (of a ghost) with Mike at her side - smiling brightly.

Joyce had never seen Mike smile so brightly, Joyce could tell since the little girl disappeared - Mike hasn't been the same.

"Hello, sweetheart," Joyce said, running her fingers through El's tangled hair smiling at the little girl.

El waves a hand at the woman who treated her somewhat like a daughter.

"Let's go get you cleaned up, and into some clean clothes. Yeah?" Joyce asked, holding her hand out of the scared girl. She looked up at Mike, her wide eyes staring up at Mike scared. Mike nodded, and put El's hand in Joyce's and told through his eyes that it ok to trust Joyce.

16th October 1987

Joyce stood in line for the movie both her as well as El and Max wanted to see for a long while.

Dirty Dancing.

Joyce was known as the 'cool mom' of the group and had taken the girls as well as herself to see the first premiere at midnight.

"Thank you for taking us, Joyce," Max said, with her arm hooked with El's.

"Yeah, thanks," El said, before speaking a word she's been wanting to call Joyce for a while. "mom."

Joyce looked at her surrogate daughter, the same young woman who Mike Wheeler has adored since day one, say the one thing she's always wanted El to call her. 'Mom'.

Joyce smiled and wrapped her arms around El. A tear dropped off Joyce's cheek and onto the top of El's head.

"It's fine, baby," Joyce said, cradling El against her. Her heart fluttering in her chest.
