THE (FINALLY) HAPPY LIFE OF EL BYERS-HOPPER
CHAPTER SIX: JAKE BYERS-HOPPER

-----------------

Jake Byers-Hopper, her somewhat half brother, was over a decade younger than his siblings. But it didn't mean that they treated him any different because he was a lot younger.

9th July 1986

Jake ran around the living room, with his stuffed teddy bear from his oldest brother trapped in his hand. He ran around the sofa and the coffee table before seeing his half-sister walk into the house, school bag on her back and her fingers intertwined with Mike Wheeler's.

"ELLIE!" The little boy dropped his teddy and ran into his sister's arms. El dropped Mike's hand and caught her baby brother.

"Hello, buddy!" El peppers Jake's face with kisses - as the little boy giggles loudly, tapping his sister's face. "Come on, tell me, what did you do today?"

El sat on the sofa, with Jake in her lap and her school bag still hanging off her shoulder. Mike smiled at his girlfriend as Jake rambled about everything he did.

Mike took her school bag off her shoulder which made El looked away from her little brother. El smiled.

"I was going to go to McDonald's, do you two want anything?" Mike asks, taking his car keys and his wallet out of his school bag and putting both his and El's school bags by the TV.

"I'll share one of those box's of 20 chicken nuggets with you, and a strawberry milkshake, please baby," El said, looking up at Mike lovingly.

"Of course, baby," Mike said, rubbing El's button nose. "What do you want, little buddy?" Mike asks, looking at El's little brother.

"Do you want a Happy Meal?" El asks, watching her little brother jump in her lap, happily. He nodded his head. Mike looks at El questioning what drink Jake should have. "Oasis," El mouthed to her boyfriend.

17th June 1993

Jake stood by a wall, phone pressed to his ear, hearing the phone ringing for the person who would be able to get him out.

"Hello?" Jake heard the voice of his brother-in-law, and he sighed with relief that someone answered.

"Hi, Mike, can I talk to Ellie?" Jake said, fiddling with the cord from the phone to the cradle.

"She's putting Lily back to sleep," Lily was Mike and El's second child who was born 1 month ago. "What's wrong?"

"I did something, Mike," Jake said, a tear rolling down his cheek. "I'm in prison,"

"WHAT?!" Mike exclaimed, only to her his daughter start crying again, his young son jump in shock at his side after a nightmare and El sighing heavily. "After El's put Lily to bed, I'll come get you,"

"Thank you, Mike, you're the best brother-in-law I could ask for," Jake said, wiping away the fallen tears, smiling brightly at the wall.

Jake is so lucky to have an older half-sister and his brother-in-law that he can fall on if he gets into trouble.
