"How?" Scott asked, gawping at the painting. This couldn't be.
Instead the Doctor started talking about something different.
"It used to have two conflicting titles"
He glanced at Stiles as he said gently "Gallifrey Falls or No More"
A strangled noise retched itself from Stiles throat. The war still vivid in his mind.
He slowly laid his hand on the painting pressing on it, as if he was trying to reach through it at a world long gone.
"Our parents burned in this fire, everyone burned. No one saw it coming"
Stiles closed his eyes, trying to stop the flood.
"Every time I think back to it I can hear their screams"
A tear trickled down his face. He struggled to carry on talking, stammering over his words.
"E-even when I try to t-think about all the good memories it's d-drowned out by screams and the s-smell of burning electrocuted f-flesh"
Scott stared at Stiles, horrified by the imagery.
He'd never really thought, not really at how much horror Stiles would have experienced in that war.
"Electrocuted-?"
Stiles spoke, looking down at the ground, refusing to look at anything else "Our e-enemies, who we fought the war against. Those...monsters used electricity as their weapon, occasionally they would vaporise us but because of our b-biologically, most of the times o-our c-corpses where l-left on the street"
The Doctor looked grim as he listened to his little brother talk.
His brother was just a child by Time Lords standards back then.
Even now he was still very young. But he'd had to grow up fast in that war, everyone did.
He was no longer a child now.
The Doctor told Scott grimly "They were called the Daleks, they were created only to hate and kill anything different than themselves"
Now he really thought about it Scott remembered "Wait, I remember. That's what they were called. Those-those machines that rose up from England years ago? Along with these robots? They were stopped somehow?"
The Doctor smiled sadly at that as he replied "I knew the women who did it. She put her life on the line to stop them. Rose Tyler"
That sad smile...
"She isn't...?" Scott asked hesitantly.
"Oh, no no! She uh was almost killed but she was saved by travelling to a parallel dimension, she can't leave that dimension though" He looked away wistfully "I can never see her again"
Scott looked completely confused.
The Doctor chuckled, shaking his head "Don't ask, it'll get more confusing if you ask"
"Okay..."
Stiles wasn't listening at all to what the Doctor was saying. He couldn't give a dam about the Doctors adventures or friends. He didn't want to know. He only wanted to know one thing...
"Is this, what I think it is?"
The Doctor nodded slowly.
"How? The calculations alone would take-"
"Hundreds of years, luckily I've had enough time to do that, I had some help from the past you could say" The Doctor chuckled.
Stiles looked up at him, his face for the first time resembling a child's hopeful pleading face.
Could this be real?
The Doctor said slowly "I thought I had killed our world but it was only because I didn't remember what happened, only bits that lead me to believe I destroyed it. But I didn't, I froze it, in time, in a pocket dimension. Much like the pocket dimension you visited but a whole planet instead of just a town"
Stiles eyes started to tear up all over again. He put his hand over his mouth, trying to muffle a sob.
"I found out the true title as well that you may like"
Stiles looked up at him, seeing him in a new light for the first time.
The Doctor smiled proudly as he said "Its really called Gallifrey Falls No More"
