My problems had been put to one side. Every night I would take my dinner to my room, finish my homework, shower then go to bed by 10pm. My new routine was interrupted since mother and Derek kept arguing.
This was nothing like the reality shows, girls at my school watched. It felt really personal. Derek kept drinking the hours away and spat horrible words to my mum's delicate face. This made her so angry - from what I could hear - and she retaliated every time.
One night though, on a Monday, I came home from school (without Clarke, we were avoiding each other) mother rushed up to me. She would usually be at the university but she was home. At home with bags by her side.
"Calvina my dear, we need to go on a short break, back home for a week. I've explained all this to the school and they have taken it as sick leave as it's the first time we've asked for it."
"Mother. Is it Derek? Has he caused all this?"
"Yes but it's my choice to have a break. This will save our relationship. He thinks your problems have got in our way for some petty reason and he doesn't think I love him. We need to leave now. I've packed a small bag for you, I'll give you a couple of minutes to get changed."
I raced upstairs and jumped into whatever I could find. Then I wrote a little letter to Clarke. I felt bad for just taking off like this.
Clarke, me and mother are taking a break for seven days because Mother's relationship with your father has gone out of hand. I'll see you soon but I'm sorry to say that I honestly don't agree with Derek's opinion of my mother lately. I hope you can see it too,
Calvina ;)
The wink was unintentional... I think.
And like that, we were on the plane back to our home country.
