Xiumin

You rushed through the tall bushes, finally finding Xiumin. He was sitting on the rock by the lake in the woods. Like always- waiting.
He turned around. Seeing you, he ran over and hugged you tightly. Your heavy breath from running was comforted by his warm gesture.
"When are you leaving?" You asked.
"Shhh..." He placed a figure on your lips as he stared into your eyes. Tears trickled down your face as you remembered when you first met Xiumin.

"Help!" You screamed as you gasped for air. You were drowning. Your brother gave you a model boat for your 9th birthday. You wanted to see it sail so you ran secretly to the lake wanting to test it out. As the boat drifted away, you grabbed for it. You accidentally slipped and fell right into the water. Not being able to swim did not help.
Water was seeping in your lungs and you wailed your arms and legs. It seems like the water was eagerly swallowing you. Your tears mixed with the water as your head disappeared beneath the surface. You thought you were dreaming as a hand held onto your waist.

You spat water on your savior's face right when you opened your eyes. You saw him wipe his wet face and groan. After realizing you were lying on his lap, you jumped up. Your head was a little dizzy but you managed your balance.

"Ya! Who are you?!" You started to cough right after you finished asking the question.
"Is that how you talk to someone who just SAVED your life?!" He was shocked. "I hope you die coughing."
He was about to leave but you collapsed on the floor holding your throat.
"Hey! Hey!!" He knelt beside you and patted your back until you threw up more water. He picked you up and sat you on a big rock.
"Oh yes! Karma strikes again," he says as he throws you a jacket. You lash at him weakly.
"You're a jerk!" You cried and rejected the jacket.
Right at that moment, a gust of wind blew through your cold body and you shivered violently. The guy shook his head and put the jacket on for you.
"You're welcome," he said after clear his throat.
"Thank you," you managed to mumble.
"Did you say something?" He asked with a smirk on his face.
"THANK YOU!!" You screamed in his ear.
He jumped back and cupped it.
"Oh may The Lord have mercy upon my soul! Whew! Gurl, I'm telling you- I have no intentions of wanting to be Helen Keller thank you very much."
You chuckled a little to yourself and sat awkwardly. You saw the boy stare into the sun with a hand over his eyes. His body was tan and his hair was wet and dripping. He caught you staring and you quickly turned all the way around. When you saw his face inches away from yours when you turned your head, you yelped.
He started laughing and you turned red. When he stopped laughing, he stuck out his hand.
"Xiumin. Nice to meet you."
"What kind of name is that?!"
"Obviously not a real name! Do you think I'd tell my real name to someone as rude as you?"
You gritted your teeth and you grudgingly shook it.
"Bluejay."
"Well Bluejay," he said as he started to leave. "You seem nice. Maybe the tiger-ish side will fade as I get to know you better. Tomorrow. This time. Meet me here?"
Before you could say anything, he ran away. He must have lived on the other side of the woods.
After much debate, you came to see him the next day. To return his jacket and to talk. Xiumin's family has a complicated history and his parents would fight often. Coming to the woods loosens his mind. He was a calm person with a good sense of humor. You felt at ease talking to him. The two of you would share secrets and jokes. You came to him with your problems and he came to you with his. When something interesting happens the news was shared. You began to visit him every day. Two days passed. Then five, a week, ten weeks, five months, a year, two, three, four, five, six, seven years. Xiumin would always be sitting on the rock by the lake in the woods. Waiting for you. Soon he had become your first guy friend, first best friend, first crush, and first love.
Then yesterday, he said he was moving. To another country. He said to come here today.
"You're not leaving till sunset tomorrow," he had said.

He wiped the tears away and smiled.
"You're such a crybaby, Bluejay." He said.
"Shut up!" You sniffed as you playfully hit his chest.
"We're gonna have fun today. Only fun." He said as he tucked a strand of hair behind your ear. And that is exactly what you guys did. [Picture everything you would do with Xiumin in the woods before he leaves!!! Examples include: water fight. Carving initials on trees. Hide and seek. Love confessions]
"Which country are you going to?" You whispered as you sat beside him staring at the glistening lake and the colorful sunset.
"I don't know Bluejay. I don't know..." He put an arm around you.
"We'll meet again though. I promise because I believe in destiny." He gave you a bracelet made of glass and held your hand. "Wait for me. We're 16 now and I'll come back for when on your 19th birthday. We'll get married too. Promise." He held out his pinky. You hooked it happily.
Xiumin kissed you for the last time before you headed back to your house. You couldn't take it as you ran from him- tears flew out of your eyes. You could picture him walking slowly with his hands behind his head away from the woods. Forever. Because Xiumin never came back.

5 years later
------------------------------------------

First year of an exchange student in South Korea. "You can do this, _______!" You said to yourself as you entered the classroom.
You slipped in an empty seat as the teacher called attendance.
"Luna Ahmad."
"Karen Burns."
........
"Minsoek Kim."
.........
"___________"
"Great. It seems as though we're all here. That only happens once in a life time. Haha I'm just kidding." The teacher laughed dryly.
You took notes and listened carefully. Although many things were in Korean, you convinced yourself that paying attention would help.
"Read pages 5 and 6 of the textbook. You are excused," the teacher said. You stretched and gathered up your things.

At lunch, a boy came to sit by you. He kept staring at your bracelet. You haven't thrown it away. After waiting for 4 years, you decided to leave. But you felt mad that he didn't keep his promise. You decided to be an exchange student and study in South Korea. Then six months after you moved there, your parents wrote you a letter saying Xiumin came looking for you. Without a second thought, you took the next plane and flew to your parents. They told Xiumin you were an exchange student in South Korea and he flew there to find you. After must confusion and frustration, you decided to stay in South Korea until you find him. Or vice versa.
You felt uncomfortable as he kept looking at your wrist. Then you accidentally chocked on your food and started coughing.
The boy hurried over and gave you his water. He patted your back until the food settled. His face was too close...
"Ya! Who are you?!"
"Is that how you talk to someone who just SAVED your life?"
The two of you looked at each other and your eyes widened with recognition.
