I woke up two hours later. I quickly checked my phone and spotted a message from Melody.

‘Where are you? The new years’ ceremony will be happening in an hour!’ it read. What new years’ ceremony? I thought out loud. Wait a second...was she meaning..? i decided to ask her.

‘Melody! Where r u?’ 2 seconds later there was a message from her.

‘At the skool’s new yrs ceremony!!’ I texted back saying:

‘What school r u on bout?” immediately she texted back saying:

‘Okumurah shadow college! Are u even awake, bro?’

How amazing! Melody had been heading to the same school as I was and I hadn’t even realised up until now. How stupid of me. Just then there was another message from her.

‘Where are you?’

‘Comin’ I texted back.

‘Where?’

‘On the bus. Arriving in two mins’

‘I’ll come collect u.’ She texted back.

‘Thanks.’ I said.

“Out of the bus people!” We had finally arrived. I quickly picked up my suitcase, shoved my backpack over my shoulders and headed for the school. As I had expected, Melody was waiting for me near the school gates. She looked ‘peng!’ She was wearing a long classy dress with short sleeves, which went down to the floor. She wore heels to prevent her dress from getting dirty; she also wore a long collar necklace with a statue of the goddess hanging from it. Her hair was out and she was wearing a lot of makeup that looked amazing on her.

“You look nice. What’s happening today? A party?” I asked.

“Hey Everlie! So happy to see you… wait a minu..-, what have you been doing? You’re a complete mess. You’d better shower before the ceremony.”

“Why? What is happening?” I asked confusedly.

“It’s the new years’ ceremony. This is where our whole year will be planned. Plus there is going to be a feast and a ball right after it.” She explained.

“So it is kind of like a party right?”

“If it makes you happy, you could say that. Now come on no time to waste, you seriously need to get changed.” She took my hand and grabbed me all the way to the school entrance. There were so many people, all of them ready for the party.

“Excuse me?” we both turned around to find a beautiful, young lady standing with her hands on her hips.

“Where do you think you are going Melody?”

“Sorry Ma’am! Everlie has arrived, so I thought I would escort her to her room.”

“Did you say that this young lady’s name is Everlie?”

“Yes Ma’am” Melody responded. The lady looked at me, observing me from head to toe; she then looked up at me and smiled. She had exquisite orange eyes which glittered in the light, and her smile was very sweet.

“Welcome Everlie. My name is Mrs Lawberry, you may call me Ma’am”

“Hello Ma’am. Nice to meet you.” I replied back shyly.

“Happy to meet you too. I am the new arrivals mentor for the New Year. I will be talking to you soon, maybe after the ball and ceremony. Enjoy yourselves tonight and actually, come and see me tomorrow in my office. I will have to talk to you about your year and the school rule etc. Is that okay with you?”
