✝"Miss?"
"Excuse me?"
"Miss!"
"I'm sorry, what?" I snapped out of my daydream.
A young waiter stood in front of me. "You need to leave, we're closing now."
"Oh.. already?"
"Ma'am you've been here for over three hours." the boy said.
"Seriously?" I gaped.
"Yes," he nodded. "You've been starring out the window this whole time, looking like a ghost, no offence."
"Oh," I laughed uneasy, "Sorry, I'll leave now." giving him a small smile I got up off the seat, the metal legs scraping against the marble floor, making an ear piercing screech, and left the coffee shop.
I never even realized I was starring out the window for so long, especially myself. When Tina took a bitch fit and stormed out, it pissed me off but also saddened me. Knowing that she probably blames me for James' death, which I don't find fair at all since she doesn't even know what actually happened. I'm sure if she did know what truly happened, she'd be freaking out and calling Dr. Cartridge. The grass.
It was about nine o'clock when I got back to my apartment. Yawning, I walked straight to my bedroom. I had such a long and stressful day, and I missed a couple of hours starring into space like a freak. I was absolutely knackered.
Kicking off my shoes and undressing, I put on my pyjamas and got straight into bed, not having the energy to take off my make up or brush my teeth, disgusting I know, but I was shattered leave me the fuck alone.
What I was looking forward to all day, came. Sleep.
✝
2 WEEKS LATER.
Today the hospital called me, saying they found movement in Daniel, he changed position. So I drove quickly to the hospital, today could be the day he finally wakes up after all this time.
Once I arrived at the hospital I went straight to his room after checking with the receptionists. I hate receptionists now, they're bitches aka Tina.
There were two male doctors and two female nurses standing outside Daniel's room, making me furrow my eyebrows. "What's going on?" I asked once I reached them.
"We've assigned this patient to another room." One of the doctors said. "I take it you know Mr Sahyoune?" he asked.
"I do yes, he's my best friend and room mate."
"Alright then, follow us. I'll be sure you'll be glad to know that your friend could be waking up. This morning he was in a higher position, like he sat up and leaned back again, also his hands were resting on his abdomen instead of at his sides like before." The same doctor said, I smiled in response.
"That's great news, thank you." I replied.
They led me into another room that was just down the hall from Daniel's old one. It looked just about the same. I didn't understand why they needed to swap his rooms.
"We'll give you both some privacy." The nurse smiled.
I thanked her quietly and watched them as they left, shutting the large wooden door behind them. I sighed and turned to Daniel, a smile alighting on my face at the thought of him waking up soon. I couldn't wait to hear his voice, his laugh, his 'shit' coloured eyes as he called them, and just him in general. My life has been dull without him, and would be boring if something bad was to happen to him.
But then I realized that not everyone wakes up from a coma all spic and span. There are effects from it. Like losing the ability to walk, or to talk. He could have memory loss, or short term memory loss. He might not even fucking wake up.
Great, now I was panicking.
I started to take deep and long breaths, slowly in, and slowly out. "Relax, everything will be alright." I whispered to myself.
Half an hour later, I was still sitting by Daniel's side, looking for any tiny bit of movement. But my bad luck struck as usual, nothing happened. I sat in silence, only my slow and sturdy breathing was heard, with Daniel's slightly warmer-than-before hand resting in mine. I watched as his chest rose and fell slowly.
At least he was breathing.
✝
I was on the couch watching late night cartoons and eating cereal in my pyjamas when there was a knock at my door. Groaning aloud I got up off the couch and walked over to the door, picking up the keys and bringing them to the lock to unlock it. When I opened the door, Officer Stephen's and Officer Brooks stood there.
"Good evening, Miss Rose. Sorry to disturb, but during the investigation of your car fire, we found something." Officer Stephen's said.
Officer Brooks just stood there as normal with a face like a slapped arse.
"Oh, really? It didn't burn?" I asked confusedly.
"Not at all. It's a little brown leather book, looks like some sort of diary. One of the investigators found it on the ground, he says it was left in the back seat."
"Oh.. can I have a look at it?"
"Sure. Brooks? Retrieve the book." Officer Stephen's demanded.
Officer Brooks took the black backpack off his back and unzipped it, bringing out a plastic wallet with indeed, a little brown leather book inside. He handed me over the bag and I smiled in response, earning a small smile off him in return. Poor boy, this must be hell for him.
I took the book out of the wallet and flicked through the pages. It did look like some sort of diary entries. Knowing me, I'd end up getting caught by Luke reading it, so I was just about to put it back in the bag when Officer Stephen's said, "No, no, no, Miss Rose. You've to keep the book."
"Me?" I asked, raising my eyebrows in shock. "It's not mine though."
"Really?" He asked, looking equally shocked as I am, "Look on the back though."
I turned the book around, seeing a white sticker on the back of it that read;
'If found, please return to Luke Brooks or Scarlet Rose.'
With my address on it.
"That little bastard." I whispered to myself.
