My best friend gives me a tight squeeze, her curly auburn hair tickling my face. I smile at Danielle, she has said time and time again that I can lean on her. I swear if I hear those damn song lyrics come from her mouth, I'll punch her. It's not tat I don't appreciate her efforts and I definitely didn't want to be faced by the idea of my imminent potential blindness alone but sometimes singing the same old song gets annoying, that is unless it's Linkin Park.
Danielle gives me a reassuring smile, her nut brown eyes shining as she leaves the hospital. I wish she could come with me, she would be able to be someone to lean on whether or not the smoke has permanently damaged my vision. I sigh, slumping onto an uncomfortable plastic seat. I just want to get this over with.
"His-sue-ee Gray?" a nurse calls. I look up. The woman looks unsure. I smile at her, standing. Please let it be good news.
"Here." I wave meekly.
"Doctor Davis can see you now." I am beckoned toward the hallway. I approach her, hear racing, stomach in my throat.
"So... His-sue-ee, what brings you to the Riverview hospital?" the nurse asks.
"Hisui." I correct. She blushes violently. "I'm here for my test results."
"Sorry." her blonde hair hides her eyes. "I'm Angela."
"Just call me Jade." I instruct.
"Jade?" the blonde asks.
"It's the English translation." I shrug.
"Well Jade, here's Doctor Davis' office. I hope it's good news." she waves with a smile. So do I Angela, so do I.
I knock on the door meekly.
"Come in Miss Gray." the gruff voice of my doctor instructs. I nod my head, opening the door.
"Hello Doctor Davis." I wave.
"Please sit down Jade." he smiles, it looks almost forced; I must just be paranoid.
"Yes Sir." I bow, Japanese decent shining through, hey, when you have ben raised from pretty much birth by your Japanese grandfather you'll follow he formalities no matter what country you're in.
"So about your test results, Jade." Doctor Davis trails off.
"What is it" I ask.
"Jade." he puts his hand on my shoulder. "I'm sorry. The results; they came out as we feared, the smoke rom the fire... it has severely damaged your vision. It's irreversible at this time. Unfortunately, this means that you will in fact be going blind."
"How long have I got?" ask.
"Statistically you have between five and ten years before you'll be truly blind however studies have showed that by having bandages over your eyes, like when you did when you were temporarily blind after the fire; the blindness will slow down slightly; it cold give you an extra year." I hang my head. I hated wearing those bandages; they were so uncomfortable.
"Thank you Doctor Davis." I stand, shaking the doctor's hand.
"Jade; will you be okay, getting home?" he frets. I nod.
I fumble through my bag, searching for my phone. I have to call Danielle.
I scroll though the contacts on my phone, pressing the call button.
She picks up on the first ring.
"Hisui." she says.
"It's me." I murmur.
"Why so glum, chum?" she asks. "Shit." she gasps.
"it's bad news Dani'." I reply.
"I'm sorry Hisui. I'll come and get you. Have you called him yet, Ash?" my eyes widen at the mention of the name Ash. There is only one person she could be referring to as Ash and he's working.
Not yet Dani'." I state.
"You should; remember how you told me the Greyer family is loaded and he promised he would take care of you if your sight got worse." she chides.
"Dani', now is not the time to imagine me living in la la land with Ash Greyer." I hiss.
"Why not." she's bound to be pouting.
"I'll see you in a bit. I'll call Ash later." I state, hanging up with a sigh.
I stare at his name on my contacts list. I don't know if I want to be faced by him, his drk hair, smoky voice, ghostly white skin and beautiful eyes. I don't know if I want to see the man who kept me sane after the fire and know that the times I see that face could be numbered.
Inevitable really.
